Early morning. The Place de la Libération is empty before eight and the pale stone takes the low sun; by ten the terraces are set out and the lanes are busy. Evening blue hour works too, with the palace lit. For season, May to October is comfortable; the vineyards south of the city are green from June and gold from late September into mid-October.

The streets, the Place de la Libération and the outside of Notre-Dame are public and free. Notre-Dame is a working church, so a session inside waits out services and keeps quiet. Climbing the Tour Philippe le Bon is guided, ticketed and needs booking — check availability first. In the vineyards at Marsannay, stay on the tracks: every parcel is privately owned and worked.
