About Saint-Raphaël & the Estérel
The Estérel is the one stretch of the Riviera that is neither white nor ochre but red. The massif behind Saint-Raphaël is volcanic rock, rhyolite the colour of rust and brick, and along the Corniche d'Or — the coast road that runs from Saint-Raphaël towards Cannes — it drops straight into water that turns from deep blue to turquoise over the sand in the coves. That contrast is the whole reason to shoot here, and it is strongest in low sun, when the rock goes from orange to almost crimson. Saint-Raphaël itself is where the day starts: a seafront of palms and Belle Époque villas, the old port, and the neo-Byzantine Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire facing the water. Most of the coast that follows still belongs to the town — Boulouris, Agay, Anthéor, Le Trayas — so one booking covers it. The picture everyone knows is at Cap Dramont: from the path around the cape, the Île d'Or sits just offshore, a red islet with a square crenellated tower that a doctor had built in 1912 before proclaiming himself its king. The island is private and admired from the shore, but the coast path and the rocks above the Plage du Débarquement — where the Allies came ashore in August 1944 — frame it from every side. Further east, the bay of Agay curls under the red bulk of the Rastel d'Agay, and past Anthéor the road climbs to the Pointe de l'Observatoire under Cap Roux, the widest view of cliffs and sea on the whole corniche. Practicalities matter here: the road is narrow and winding, so the photographer plans two or three stops rather than a drive-by; parking at the viewpoints is scarce in July and August; and in summer the prefecture can close the massif on days of high fire risk — the coast road, the beaches and the town stay open.

Top Photo Spots in Saint-Raphaël and the Estérel
The most photogenic locations for your Saint-Raphaël & the Estérel photoshoot
Cap Dramont and the Île d'Or
Red volcanic rock in the foreground and a crenellated tower on its own islet just offshore — the Estérel's signature view.
Best time: Sunrise or the last hour before sunset, when the rock glows deep red
Park by the Plage du Débarquement and walk the coast path from there. Flat shoes; the best ledges are a short scramble above the water.
Pointe de l'Observatoire under Cap Roux
The widest view on the Corniche d'Or — red pinnacles, clear coves and the open sea from a lookout on the coast road.
Best time: Early morning or late afternoon; midday flattens the red
The parking holds only a few cars — arrive early in summer. Stay behind the wall: the drop to the coves is sheer.
The bay of Agay
A sheltered horseshoe bay of sand and moored boats under the red dome of the Rastel d'Agay.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the Rastel d'Agay catches the sun
In July and August the beach fills by late morning — book the end of the day. Agay has its own train stop, so a car is optional.
Saint-Raphaël seafront and the basilica
Palms, Belle Époque villas and the domed basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire beside the old port.
Best time: The last hours of daylight and blue hour, when the promenade lights come on
The basilica is a working church — facade and steps from the street. In summer the old-port side is calmer than the beach promenade.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need a permit to elope in France?
It depends on what kind of ceremony you want. A symbolic ceremony — exchanging vows with a celebrant or just each other — needs no permit at all and can happen in a lavender field, on a clifftop or a mountain meadow; this is what almost all eloping couples choose, handling the legal paperwork at home before or after. A legally binding civil wedding in France is only possible at a town hall and requires that one of you has lived in that commune for at least a month, which rules it out for most visitors. Note that some sites — the gardens of Versailles, Paris museums, certain protected beaches — restrict professional photography, so ceremonies happen near, not inside them. Your Photo France photographer will flag any location-specific rules during planning.
How long does an elopement photography session last?
It scales with your day. The minimal version is a 60-90 minute session covering the vows and a portrait walk — from €300, ideal if you're keeping things spontaneous. Half-day coverage (3-4 hours) adds getting ready, the journey to the spot, and a relaxed golden-hour portrait session after the ceremony. Full-day coverage follows the whole story from morning coffee to a candlelit dinner table. Most eloping couples in France land in the middle: ceremony at a quiet hour, then a slow wander through a Provençal village or along the Étretat cliffs as newlyweds. Describe your day to your Photo France photographer and they'll recommend honest coverage — nobody will upsell you hours you won't need.
Can our photographer recommend ceremony locations?
Yes — this is where a local photographer earns their keep twice over. They know which lavender fields near Gordes are on private land and which welcome couples, which stretch of the Étretat cliffs stays empty at sunrise, what time the light drops behind the Aiguille du Midi above Chamonix, and which spots that look perfect on Instagram are actually next to a coach car park. Tell them the mood you want — vast and dramatic, soft and intimate, village-romantic — and you'll get concrete suggestions with photos, timing advice and honest warnings. They can also connect you with celebrants, florists and musicians they've worked with. Couples consistently tell us the location their photographer suggested beat the one they'd found researching from home.
How much does a photoshoot in Saint-Raphaël and the Estérel cost?
Professional photoshoots in Saint-Raphaël and the Estérel start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — from a short session on the rocks facing the Île d'Or to a longer one with two or three stops along the Corniche d'Or.
What are the best photo spots in Saint-Raphaël and the Estérel?
Cap Dramont and the rocks above the Plage du Débarquement for the red cliffs with the Île d'Or and its tower offshore, the bay of Agay under the Rastel d'Agay, the Pointe de l'Observatoire below Cap Roux for the widest view of the corniche, and the Saint-Raphaël seafront with its palms, Belle Époque villas and the Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire basilica.
When is the best time for photos in the Estérel?
In low sun, at either end of the day — that is when the Estérel rock turns from orange to deep red and the sea goes turquoise in the coves; at midday the colour washes out and the glare off the water is hard. Spring and autumn are the easy seasons: warm, uncrowded, and the massif open. In July and August, start early: parking at the viewpoints is hard to find from mid-morning, and the prefecture can close the massif on days of high fire risk.
