About Dinard & the Emerald Coast

Dinard is the Breton coast at its most theatrical: a resort the British made fashionable in the 1850s, four hundred Belle Époque villas stacked on granite headlands, and the walled city of Saint-Malo across the estuary like a stage set. The Plage de l'Écluse is the centre of it — a crescent of sand under the casino, lined every summer with the blue-and-white striped bathing tents that have been the town's signature for a century, and watched over by a bronze Hitchcock perched on an egg, mascot of the British film festival held here each autumn. From the beach the Promenade du Clair de Lune runs south along the Baie du Prieuré, a narrow seafront path through palms, agaves and mimosa that flower far earlier than this latitude should allow. Above it the Pointe du Moulinet gives the view everyone comes for: turreted villas, turquoise water below, and the ramparts of Saint-Malo with the Fort National on the far side. West of town the Emerald Coast keeps going — the rock arch at Saint-Lunaire's Pointe du Décollé, then the pink sandstone cliffs and heather of Cap Fréhel, seventy metres above the sea. One thing governs every session here: the tide. The range in this bay is among the largest in Europe, and the beach you photographed at low water is gone six hours later, so check the tables before fixing an hour.

Top Photo Spots in Dinard & the Emerald Coast

The most photogenic locations for your Dinard & the Emerald Coast photoshoot

The Plage de l'Écluse and its bathing tents

The town's crescent beach under the casino, lined every summer with blue-and-white striped tents — Dinard's oldest photographic habit.

Best time: Afternoon to sunset, spring to early autumn, while the tents are up

The tents are seasonal — check they are in place before building the shot around them. At high water the sand almost disappears, but the sea wall above still works.

The Promenade du Clair de Lune to the Pointe du Moulinet

A narrow seafront path through palms and agaves along the Baie du Prieuré, climbing to the headland where the villas look straight at Saint-Malo.

Best time: Morning on the promenade, late afternoon on the headland

The path is narrow and busy in season; the terrace at the Moulinet is small, so plan a short stop rather than an hour there. Steps are involved in both directions.

Saint-Lunaire and the Pointe du Décollé

A rock headland four kilometres west of Dinard, with a footbridge over a sea cave and the whole Emerald Coast opening on both sides.

Best time: Late afternoon and sunset; the point faces the open sea

Wet granite is slippery and the headland is fully exposed to the wind — flat shoes and a layer. Parking at the end of the road is free but small on summer evenings.

Cap Fréhel

Pink sandstone cliffs seventy metres above the sea, a heath of gorse and heather, and a lighthouse at the end of the road — the wild end of the Emerald Coast.

Best time: Late afternoon to sunset; purple heather in August and September

Nearly an hour by road from Dinard, so budget the drive. No shade, no shelter and real cliff edges: stay on the marked paths and check the seasonal parking rules before setting off.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in Dinard cost?

Professional photoshoots in Dinard start from €279. Packages differ by duration and by the number of edited photos you receive. An hour covers the Plage de l'Écluse and the Pointe du Moulinet comfortably; two hours lets you add the Promenade du Clair de Lune, or drive west along the Emerald Coast to Saint-Lunaire. Most visiting couples and families book one to two hours.

What are the best photo spots in Dinard?

The striped bathing tents on the Plage de l'Écluse are the town's signature, and the sea wall above them frames the whole crescent of sand. The Promenade du Clair de Lune adds palms, agaves and a view straight across at Saint-Malo, while the Pointe du Moulinet stacks turreted villas above turquoise water. Further out, the rock arch at Saint-Lunaire and the cliffs of Cap Fréhel repay the drive.

What is the best time of day for photos in Dinard?

Late afternoon into sunset. The light arrives from the west across the sea, warms the villas on the Moulinet headland and lets the beach empty out at the same time. Early morning is the quiet alternative, with soft light on Saint-Malo opposite. July and August bring the bathing tents but also the crowds; September and early October keep the colour and lose most of the visitors.

Do the tides change what we can photograph in Dinard?

More than anything else here. The tidal range in this bay is among the largest in Europe, and between low and high water the sand, the rock pools and the walk you had in mind can simply be gone. A local photographer builds the route around the day's tide table rather than the other way round, so check the times before you fix an hour.

How long is a typical couples photoshoot in France?

Most couples sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, enough time to visit 2-3 locations and capture a wide variety of natural, relaxed moments together. In Paris you might start at the Trocadéro with the Eiffel Tower behind you, cross the Pont de Bir-Hakeim and finish in the quiet lanes of Montmartre; on the Riviera your photographer will route you through Èze's stone passages before the tour groups arrive. Longer 2-hour sessions are perfect if you want to explore more. Book with Photo France and we'll match you with the ideal photographer for your style.

What should we wear for a couples photoshoot?

The golden rule is to coordinate without matching — complementary colors and classic styles that reflect your personality. Solid, muted tones (cream, navy, sage, terracotta) photograph beautifully against Paris' limestone façades, Provence's ochre villages and the Riviera's blue. Avoid busy patterns, large logos and neon colors. Comfortable shoes matter: Montmartre's cobbles are steep, Èze is all stairs, and lavender fields are dusty. Bring a second outfit for variety on longer sessions, and a light layer for breezy evenings on the coast or by the lakes. Your Photo France photographer will send a personalized style guide for your location, season and time of day.
