About The Pink Granite Coast

The Côte de Granit Rose is a short stretch of the Côtes-d'Armor coast — roughly ten kilometres between Perros-Guirec and Trébeurden — where three-hundred-million-year-old granite comes to the surface with enough feldspar in it to read as pink, orange or salmon depending on the hour. Ploumanac'h is the heart of it: a shore of rounded boulders, some of them the size of a house, weathered into forms the locals have named for centuries, with the Mean Ruz lighthouse built out of the same stone standing on the point above them. The colour is the whole subject, and it is at its strongest in the last two hours of light, when low sun makes the rock glow against a blue sea; flat midday sun turns it grey and disappointing, which is why an afternoon booking here matters more than at most locations. Between Ploumanac'h and the Plage de Trestraou at Perros-Guirec runs the Sentier des Douaniers, the old customs path, about four and a half kilometres of coast path passing the Château de Costaérès on its private islet — a nineteenth-century granite house that photographs like a fairy tale and can only ever be shot from the shore. Boats leave Trestraou for the Sept-Îles, a seabird reserve holding France's only gannet colony, on Rouzic; only the Île aux Moines can be landed on. West at Trégastel, the Île Renote is a tied island of pools and boulders you can walk out onto at low water. Tides here run up to about ten metres, so the shore you photograph in the morning is not the shore of the afternoon — check the tide table before you fix a time.

Top Photo Spots in The Pink Granite Coast

The most photogenic locations for your The Pink Granite Coast photoshoot

Ploumanac'h and the Mean Ruz lighthouse

House-sized pink boulders piled along the shore, with a lighthouse built from the same stone standing among them on the point.

Best time: The last two hours before sunset, when the granite actually reads pink

Check the tide table first — the shore at low water is a different place. The path from the Plage Saint-Guirec is short and level enough for long dresses.

The Sentier des Douaniers and Château de Costaérès

The old customs path along the cliff top, with a nineteenth-century granite castle standing on its own islet just offshore.

Best time: Late afternoon into the golden hour; start from the Trestraou end to walk against the summer flow

Costaérès is private and can only be shot from the shore. The path is uneven granite in places — no heels, and expect wind from the north-west.

Plage de Trestraou and the Sept-Îles

A wide sand beach below a belle-époque seafront, with the seven islands of a seabird reserve lined up on the horizon.

Best time: Evening after seven, when the beach empties; low tide for reflections on the wet sand

The eastern end under the cliff keeps rock in the frame. Island boat sailings depend on season and weather — check the day before if they matter to the plan.

The Île Renote, Trégastel

A tied island of pink boulders, sheltered pools and short turf, reached on foot across a sand bar at the end of Trégastel beach.

Best time: Sunrise or the last hour; low water for the reflecting pools at the northern end

The sand neck can cover on a big tide — check the table before crossing. It is the quieter alternative when Ploumanac'h is full.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot on the Pink Granite Coast cost?

Professional photoshoots start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos. One hour covers the Ploumanac'h boulders and the lighthouse; two hours is enough to walk part of the Sentier des Douaniers past the Château de Costaérès and finish on the beach at Trestraou. Everything sits within a few kilometres, so little of the time goes on driving.

What are the best photo spots on the Pink Granite Coast?

The boulder shore at Ploumanac'h with the Mean Ruz lighthouse built from the same pink stone; the Sentier des Douaniers, where the Château de Costaérès sits on its private islet; the wide beach at Trestraou with the Sept-Îles on the horizon; and the Île Renote at Trégastel, a tied island of pools and rock you can walk onto at low water.

When does the pink granite actually look pink?

In the last two hours before sunset, and to a lesser degree at sunrise. Low sun brings out the feldspar and the rock reads pink, orange or salmon against a blue sea; under flat midday light it goes grey and the whole point of the place disappears. May to September gives the light and the long evenings, and winter storms make the most dramatic frames.

Do the tides change what we can photograph here?

Completely. The range on this coast runs to around ten metres, so a shore covered in water at midday can be a field of boulders and rock pools four hours later, and the walk out to the Île Renote only exists at low water. Sections of the coast path flood too. Check the tide table for your date and let your photographer set the hour around it.

How long is a typical couples photoshoot in France?

Most couples sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, enough time to visit 2-3 locations and capture a wide variety of natural, relaxed moments together. In Paris you might start at the Trocadéro with the Eiffel Tower behind you, cross the Pont de Bir-Hakeim and finish in the quiet lanes of Montmartre; on the Riviera your photographer will route you through Èze's stone passages before the tour groups arrive. Longer 2-hour sessions are perfect if you want to explore more. Book with Photo France and we'll match you with the ideal photographer for your style.

What should we wear for a couples photoshoot?

The golden rule is to coordinate without matching — complementary colors and classic styles that reflect your personality. Solid, muted tones (cream, navy, sage, terracotta) photograph beautifully against Paris' limestone façades, Provence's ochre villages and the Riviera's blue. Avoid busy patterns, large logos and neon colors. Comfortable shoes matter: Montmartre's cobbles are steep, Èze is all stairs, and lavender fields are dusty. Bring a second outfit for variety on longer sessions, and a light layer for breezy evenings on the coast or by the lakes. Your Photo France photographer will send a personalized style guide for your location, season and time of day.
