On the day, the photographer arrives early and blends in — photographing the view like any tourist — while actually tracking you. The proposal itself is captured from a distance with a long lens, then the photographer reveals themselves and continues with a celebratory mini-session: the ring, the happy tears, the toast. Within days you receive a gallery that starts seconds before the question and ends with the two of you glowing. No — discretion is the whole craft. French landmarks work in your favour here: at the Trocadéro, on the Seine bridges or in Èze's garden, everyone is holding a camera, so one more photographer attracts zero attention. Your photographer will scout the spot beforehand, position themselves naturally, and never make eye contact with you until the ring is out. If you're especially worried, choose a busier spot or a photographer working with a longer lens; we'll advise on both.

It depends where you are. The Côte d'Azur enjoys around 300 sunny days a year, so an Èze or Antibes proposal has excellent odds; Paris and Normandy are less predictable, which is why every proposal plan comes with a backup: an alternative sheltered location (the arcades of the Palais-Royal, a covered passage, a museum courtyard), a flexible time window on the same day, or a free reschedule to the next day if conditions are truly impossible. Overcast light is actually soft and flattering for photos, and a light drizzle on the Seine quays has produced some very cinematic proposals — so a grey sky alone is no reason to panic. Your photographer will talk you through the options the day before, and the decision always stays yours.

Professional photoshoots in Cannes start from €310, and most one- to two-hour packages fall between about €310 and €450 depending on length and the number of edited photos. That covers anything from a short early session on the Croisette to a longer route that climbs through Le Suquet for golden hour over the old port. Edited photos usually arrive within about a week.

The Croisette with its palms and belle-époque hotel facades, the beach in front of the Carlton, the red-carpet steps of the Palais des Festivals when no event is on, the lanes of Le Suquet climbing above the Vieux Port, the terrace by the Musée des Explorations du Monde facing west over the bay and the Esterel hills, and the Marché Forville for colour in the morning.

Shoot the Croisette early, before the promenade fills and while the light on the bay is still soft, then keep Le Suquet for golden hour — its terrace is the town's one genuine sunset spot and stays quiet. Summer middays are harsh and crowded; May, June and September give the same light with far fewer people, and winter afternoons on the seafront are surprisingly mild and clear.
