Le Suquet bell tower over the old port at sunset

Le Suquet is the hill Cannes started on, a knot of stepped lanes above the old port with the church of Notre-Dame-d'Espérance and its square tower at the top. The terrace beside the church is the town's viewpoint: the Vieux Port and its masts directly below, the arc of the Croisette running east, the Esterel hills red behind the bay.

The climb up Rue Saint-Antoine is the other half of the location. Narrow, stepped, hung with restaurant lanterns and bougainvillea, it gives close portrait frames all the way, so a session can work the lanes on the way up and finish on the terrace for the wide shot — one walk, two completely different sets of pictures.

Sunset is the reason to be there at that hour: the sun drops behind the Esterel to the west, so the terrace looks across a lit bay with the light behind the hills rather than in the lens, and the port lamps come on while the sky still holds colour. Morning is clean and empty but flat over the water. Winter afternoons are excellent — low sun, warm stone, nobody on the steps.

Practical: it is a real climb on uneven steps, so plan footwear and pace, especially in August heat. The terrace is small and shared with the restaurants and the church, so keep the group tight and quiet — services and events happen. Parking near the port fills early in season; the walk from the Palais des Festivals takes about ten minutes.
