About Bonifacio
Bonifacio is the most photogenic town in Corsica and the least forgiving of a lazy plan, because the three things worth shooting sit on three different levels. On top is the haute ville: a Genoese town of tall narrow houses packed onto a white limestone headland, whole streets standing on cliff that visibly overhangs the sea below. The Bastion de l'Étendard and the walk out to the marine cemetery on the point give you the town's own skyline; the frames that sell the place, though, are taken from the water, on the hour-long boat trips that run out of the marina to the sea caves and back along the cliff. Cut into that same cliff is the Escalier du Roi d'Aragon, 187 steps dropping at a brutal angle to a ledge above the sea — the story says Aragonese besiegers cut them in a single night in 1420, the likelier truth is that they were cut to reach fresh water. It is ticketed, it is slippery, and it closes in heavy wind or rain, so check on the morning.
