Èze: the Jardin Exotique terraces at opening

Èze is a medieval village stacked on a rock four hundred metres above the Mediterranean, between Nice and Monaco. At the top, the ticketed Jardin Exotique plants cactus and sculpture across the old castle ruins, and the upper terraces look straight down at Cap Ferrat and the sea. Arrive for opening — the garden opens at nine — and midweek you may have those terraces almost to yourselves.

The vaulted stone lanes below are your second location for the portraits afterwards. Be out of them by eleven, when the day-trip flow from Nice and Monaco fills passages barely a person wide. One caution: the terraces of the hotel at the summit are guest territory, so do not build the moment around them.

Lake Annecy: the Pont des Amours at first light

Annecy hands you the cliché and makes it work anyway. The Pont des Amours — the bridge of lovers — crosses the Vassé canal with rowing boats moored beneath and the lake opening out behind. At seven in the morning it is empty and the water is glass; by eleven it is a queue.

Ten minutes away, the old town gives you the Palais de l'Île splitting the Thiou like a stone ship's bow, and turquoise canals lined with flowers. Avoid market days — Tuesday, Friday and Sunday — if you want the quays to yourselves. The Jardins de l'Europe and the Pâquier lawn are where the celebration photographs happen once the answer is yes.

Mont-Saint-Michel: blue hour on the bridge

An abbey on a rock that the sea surrounds and abandons twice a day. The pedestrian bridge gives the classic approach, and blue hour with the abbey lit behind you is one of the most dramatic proposal frames in France. Mont-Saint-Michel also comes with a rule you must not improvise around: check the tide table before you plan anything, because the bay has some of the largest tides in Europe and the water comes in fast. Never walk out onto the sand flats without a licensed guide.

Practically, this means booking your slot around the tide rather than the sunset, and bringing boots — the good angles are muddy. Sleep on the mainland close enough to be on the bridge before the first shuttles run.

Gordes and the Luberon: the lay-by at golden hour

The panoramic lay-by on the road into Gordes stacks the entire dry-stone village up its cliff in one frame. It faces roughly west, so it is a golden-hour spot, not a morning one: in the last two hours before sunset the sun rakes the facades and turns them amber. It is also, honestly, one of the easiest great proposal spots in France — you park, you walk twenty metres, and the backdrop is already there.

Five minutes down the valley, the Abbaye de Sénanque frames its lavender rows against a Romanesque church from roughly late June to mid-July. Corsica: Bonifacio's cliff path in the morning

Corsica is where you go if you want the moment to feel like nobody else on earth is nearby. Bonifacio's medieval upper town sits on a shelf of white limestone the sea has undercut, with the Grain de Sable stack below. Shoot from the cliff path east of the citadel in the morning, when the sun is on the stone rather than behind it, then take the marina at the foot of the town in the evening.

Calvi answers with a citadel above a crescent of sand; Palombaggia and Santa Giulia near Porto-Vecchio give pale beaches and leaning umbrella pines, best at first light before the parasols go up. Logistics matter here more than anywhere: flights and ferries come from Nice and Marseille, distances are slow rather than long, and wind can rearrange a coastal plan without warning. Give Corsica a whole morning and a plan B inland.

Saint-Malo: the ramparts on a falling tide

Saint-Malo is a granite city walled against the Atlantic, and the two-kilometre rampart circuit is free, open and made for walking while you build up the nerve. Below the north wall, the ranks of weathered wooden breakwater posts standing in the sand are the frame the city is known for, and Fort National sits out on its rock.

The tide runs everything here — the range is among the largest in Europe. At low water you can walk out to the Grand Bé; at high water it is cut off and people who mistimed it wait hours. Making a surprise work outside a big city

Fewer people means easier hiding and harder logistics. Three rules make it work. First, arrive the day before: a missed ferry or a mountain road closure is not a story you want on the morning. Second, agree an exact mark and a simple signal with your photographer — a specific lamppost, the third bench, setting your bag down — because outside the city there is often no crowd to hide in, and the photographer will be working from further away with a longer lens. Third, give them a plan B in writing: a covered arcade, a lower viewpoint, an hour later.
