The cliffs face south and west, so late afternoon and the hour before sunset light the town while the sea darkens behind it; sunrise works from the marina. May, June and September are the months — warm, clear and walkable. July and August turn the haute ville into a shuffle, and August midday light is flat and harsh.

It is ticketed and normally open through the season, but it is 187 steep worn steps cut down a cliff face and it closes in strong wind or heavy rain — check on the morning rather than the week before. Flat shoes are essential and a long dress is a bad idea. The boat trips out of the marina stop in the same weather.
