Cours Masséna under the market awnings

The Cours Masséna cuts through the old town under a long iron-framed hall, and every morning it fills with the Marché Provençal: flower buckets, olive trays, cheese and charcuterie stalls, lavender and soap, tomatoes stacked in colour order. The lane is narrow and the facades on either side are ochre and pink, so the whole thing reads as one warm corridor.

For photographs it is the opposite of a monument: no wide frame to line up, just density. Work close — hands over produce, a couple sharing something, colour blocks behind the shoulders — and use the awning as a soft light source, because the covered lane diffuses everything and removes the harsh Mediterranean contrast. That makes late morning perfectly usable here when it would be hopeless outdoors.

Go early if you want space to move: between eight and ten the stalls are set and the aisle is walkable. From eleven the market is at full pressure and you are photographing in a crowd, which can be exactly what you want for a lively family or engagement set but is no good for anything posed.

Practical: the market runs mornings and closes around lunchtime, and out of season it is usually shut one day a week — check the day before planning around it. Stallholders are working: ask before photographing a stall closely, buy something, and keep the aisle clear. In the afternoons the same hall hosts an artisans' market on many days, which is quieter and photographs differently.
