About Yvoire & the French shore of Lake Geneva
Yvoire is small enough to walk end to end in ten minutes, which is exactly why it photographs well: everything is one frame from everything else. The village was fortified in 1306 by Amédée V of Savoy and still has its walls and its gates; inside them the lanes are grey stone hung with geraniums and petunias from June to September, and those flowers are the reason Yvoire sits on the Plus Beaux Villages de France list and keeps winning the flowering prizes. The château on the point is private and closed to visitors, but it is the picture: seen from the fishermen's harbour or the breakwater it rises straight out of the water with the Swiss shore behind it. Beside it, the Jardin des Cinq Sens was laid out in the 1980s inside the château's old kitchen garden — hornbeam walls, a cloister plan, rooms for touch, taste, smell, sight and sound. It is ticketed and seasonal, roughly mid-April to early October, so check the dates before you build a session around it. The harbour is the other half of the day. The Lake Geneva company's Belle Époque fleet calls here in season on the crossings to Nyon and the Swiss shore, and a paddle steamer coming alongside is worth timing a frame for; check the current sailings, because the winter timetable is a different thing entirely. Ten minutes east, Excenevex has the only natural sand beach on Lake Geneva, shallow and backed by pines, at its best late in the afternoon when the light comes down the water. Timing: June or September. In August the lanes are a queue by eleven, and from November to March a large part of the village simply shuts.

Top Photo Spots in Yvoire
The most photogenic locations for your Yvoire & the French shore of Lake Geneva photoshoot
The medieval gates and the flowered lanes
Grey stone lanes inside a fourteenth-century wall, hung with geraniums and petunias from June to September — the reason Yvoire wins its flowering prizes.
Best time: Before 10am or after 5pm, June to September
Use the stone gate arches as a frame around your subject. Skip the middle of the day — the lanes are two metres wide and the day boats fill them.
The harbour, the breakwater and the château
The fourteenth-century château standing straight out of the water above the fishermen's harbour, with the Swiss shore as a pale line behind it.
Best time: Sunrise for front light on the château; late afternoon for silhouettes off the breakwater
The château is private — shoot it from the harbour, the breakwater or the water. Check the current boat timetable if you want a paddle steamer in the frame.
Le Jardin des Cinq Sens
A walled garden laid out in the château's old kitchen plot as a cloister of hornbeam rooms — touch, taste, smell, sight and sound.
Best time: First hour after opening, roughly mid-April to early October
Ticketed and seasonal with its own photography rules — check the opening dates and ask permission ahead. The clipped hedge rooms give clean green backdrops even at midday.
Excenevex beach
The only natural sand beach on Lake Geneva — a shallow shelving crescent backed by pines, ten minutes east of Yvoire.
Best time: Late afternoon into sunset; out of season for an empty beach
The shallows go a long way out — waders get reflections without any drop-off. Parking is paid in season and the dunes behind are protected, so stay on the marked paths.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in France?
For peak-season dates — May through September, and especially Saturdays in Provence, the Loire or on the Riviera — book 6-12 months ahead. The best-reviewed photographers are often the first vendors to sell out after the venue itself. Shoulder-season and weekday weddings are far more flexible; three to four months is usually comfortable. If your date is closer than that, don't assume it's hopeless: availability shifts, and Photo France can check the whole vetted roster for your date at once instead of you emailing photographers one by one. When comparing, look at full wedding galleries rather than portfolio highlights — how a photographer handles a candlelit château dinner tells you more than their best ten frames.
How many hours of coverage do we need?
Work backwards from the moments you can't lose. An intimate ceremony with dinner fits in 4-5 hours: preparations, vows, couple portraits at golden hour, first toasts. A classic full wedding day — getting ready through the first dances — runs 8-10 hours. French weddings run famously long: dinner often starts at 9pm, the pièce montée arrives near midnight and the dancing goes until dawn; if your party will peak at 2am, budget coverage for it or arrange a set finishing time you're at peace with. One France-specific tip: in June and July the sun sets after 9:30pm, so schedule couple portraits around that golden window rather than the ceremony's end — your photographer will plan the whole timeline around it. Discuss your running order with your photographer and they'll recommend honest hours, not maximum hours.
Do photographers travel to any venue in France?
Yes — château and countryside weddings are the norm here, and photographers are used to travelling. Many are based in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux or Nice and take the TGV or drive out to Provence, the Loire, Normandy and the Alps routinely; others live in the wedding regions themselves. For remote venues, travel and accommodation costs are quoted transparently up front — for a Saturday wedding at a bastide deep in the Luberon, expect the photographer to arrive the day before rather than gamble on morning traffic, and that overnight stay appears in the quote. When you enquire through Photo France, mention the region and venue in the first message; we'll prioritise photographers already near your venue, which trims cost and adds local knowledge of the light and the layout.
How much does a photoshoot in Yvoire cost?
Professional photoshoots in Yvoire start from €310. Packages differ by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour in the flowered lanes and at the harbour sits at the lower end, while two hours adding the breakwater and Excenevex beach usually runs to about €450. The village is small enough that nothing is more than a few minutes' walk.
What are the best photo spots in Yvoire and on the French shore of Lake Geneva?
The medieval gates and the stone lanes under their geraniums, the fishermen's harbour with the château rising straight out of the water behind, the breakwater looking across to the Swiss shore, and the Jardin des Cinq Sens inside its hornbeam walls. Ten minutes east, Excenevex adds the only natural sand beach on the lake.
What is the best time of day and season in Yvoire?
Come before ten or after five. Day boats land visitors through the middle of the day and the lanes are narrow enough that a queue shows in every frame. June to September is the flowering season and the reason the village looks the way it does; from November to March a good part of it closes and the lake turns grey.
