Before ten in the morning the street is genuinely empty and the low sun runs up it from the east. Late afternoon suits the terrace, when the Cure valley goes warm and hazy. For season, late spring and September are the honest recommendation: July and August bring coaches by midday, and in winter much of the village closes and the hill is often in cloud.

The basilica is a working church with free entry, so photography is generally fine, but services take priority and a session waits them out and keeps quiet. Rules on tripods and commercial shoots are the community's to set — check before the day. Cars are kept out of the upper village: park at the bottom by the Champ-de-Foire and walk up, five to ten minutes on a steady slope.
