About Fontainebleau & Vaux-le-Vicomte
Fontainebleau is an hour south of Paris and does the thing Versailles cannot: grandeur without the queue. Every ruler from the twelfth century to Napoleon III added to the château, so it is a sprawl of courtyards rather than one facade, and the frame that matters is the Escalier en fer à cheval — the horseshoe staircase of 1634 curving down in two arms into the Cour du Cheval Blanc, the courtyard where Napoleon said goodbye to his guard before Elba. The gardens run behind it and are free to walk: the Jardin de Diane with its bronze fountain and old plane trees, Le Nôtre's Grand Parterre, the carp pond with its little island pavilion, and the Grand Canal, dug in 1609 and older than the one at Versailles, with rowing boats on the water in summer. Around all of it is the forest — twenty-five thousand hectares of oak, pine and sandstone, and the boulders are the surprise: the Gorges d'Apremont and the Trois Pignons are fields of grey rock in open heath, painted by the Barbizon school before anyone climbed on them, and completely unlike anything else within reach of Paris. Twenty minutes north, Vaux-le-Vicomte closes the location: Le Vau, Le Brun and Le Nôtre working together for the first time, a domed façade above a moat and two kilometres of parterres running away behind it — the rehearsal for Versailles, and still privately owned. Both estates are ticketed and set their own rules for professional shoots, and Vaux opens on a seasonal calendar rather than year-round, so check the dates and the conditions before a session is booked inside either gate.

Top Photo Spots in Fontainebleau
The most photogenic locations for your Fontainebleau & Vaux-le-Vicomte photoshoot
The château gardens and the Grand Canal
Free to walk: a bronze fountain under old planes, Le Nôtre's parterre, a carp pond with an island pavilion, and a canal dug in 1609.
Best time: Early morning for reflections on the carp pond; evening down the length of the canal
Gardens are free and open earlier than the château. Real distances — the canal's far end is twenty minutes on foot from the courtyard.
The forest boulders at the Gorges d'Apremont
Fields of grey sandstone blocks in open heath and oak — the landscape the Barbizon painters came for, ten minutes from the château.
Best time: Late afternoon in autumn, when the sandstone goes orange and the heath turns russet
Open, free forest but uneven and sandy — park at a marked car park, stay on waymarked paths, take water. Climbers on the rock at weekends.
The horseshoe staircase, Cour du Cheval Blanc
Two curving arms of stone dropping into an enormous empty courtyard — the staircase where Napoleon said goodbye to his guard.
Best time: The first hour after the gardens open, or golden hour when the sun comes straight in
Pale gravel acts as a reflector. National estate with its own rules for professional shoots — check before booking the courtyards.
Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte
A domed façade above a moat with two kilometres of Le Nôtre parterres behind it — the rehearsal for Versailles, still privately owned.
Best time: Still mornings for the moat reflection; evening down the garden axis
Private, ticketed and open on a seasonal calendar — check dates and shoot rules before booking. Twenty-five minutes north of Fontainebleau.
Frequently asked questions
What if my kids won't cooperate during the photoshoot?
This happens all the time, and our family photographers are prepared for it. The secret is that the best family photos don't come from asking kids to pose — they come from play. Your photographer will turn the session into a game: racing along the beach at Biarritz, feeding ducks in Annecy, hunting for gargoyles on Paris' old churches, storming the towers of Carcassonne. Tantrums and shy phases get waited out with a break and a pain au chocolat, and sessions are scheduled around naps and meals. Even a session that feels chaotic in the moment produces wonderful genuine images — often better than the ones where everyone behaved.
What's the best age for a family photoshoot?
There's no wrong age — each stage photographs differently and beautifully. Babies bring quiet, tender close-ups; toddlers bring motion and hilarious candid moments; school-age kids love the adventure of exploring châteaux and beaches on camera; teens relax once they realise nobody is forcing stiff poses. Multi-generation shoots with grandparents are among the most treasured bookings we see, especially on family reunion trips to Provence or the Loire. The one practical tip: with children under five, book morning sessions when energy and light are both at their best. Your Photo France photographer adapts the pace and games to the ages in your group.
How should we dress for a family photoshoot?
Aim for a coordinated palette rather than identical outfits: two or three soft colors that everyone wears in their own way. Creams, soft blues, sage and sand tones look wonderful against Paris' pale stone, Provence's ochre walls and the Atlantic's grey-green sea. Skip big logos, characters and neon shades. Dress kids in clothes they can move and play in — the session will involve running, climbing steps and sitting on beaches or lawns. Bring a change of clothes for little ones (French fountains and beaches are irresistible) and comfortable shoes for cobbled lanes. Your photographer will send simple styling tips for your specific location and season when you book.
How much does a photoshoot in Fontainebleau cost?
Professional photoshoots in Fontainebleau start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos, roughly €310 to €450 for one to two hours — the horseshoe staircase and the gardens in the short version, or a longer session that drives out to the forest boulders or Vaux-le-Vicomte.
What are the best photo spots in Fontainebleau?
The horseshoe staircase in the Cour du Cheval Blanc, the Jardin de Diane with its bronze fountain under old plane trees, Le Nôtre's Grand Parterre and the Grand Canal behind it, the sandstone boulders and open heath at the Gorges d'Apremont in the forest, and the moated façade and parterres of Vaux-le-Vicomte to the north.
What is the best time of day and season in Fontainebleau?
The gardens open before the château does, so the first hour gives the staircase and the parterres without visitors, and low sun from the east lights the façade. Evening suits the forest, where the sandstone goes orange. Autumn is the strongest season: the beech and oak turn, and the heath around the boulders goes russet.
