Seven or eight in the morning for Petite France, when the quays are empty and the water is flat enough to double the facades. The cathedral wants the other end of the day: low evening sun turns the Vosges sandstone ember-red. Blue hour suits the Barrage Vauban, with the towers lit. In December the Christmas markets bring wonderful light and impossible crowds, so go at dawn.

It is beautiful and it is busy. The Christmas markets fill the centre from late November to the end of December — check the year's dates — the cathedral square becomes a market, and the city closes streets and runs bag checks. Dawn sessions still get you empty quays and lit decorations; evenings give warmth and colour, but you will be photographing inside a crowd.
