The cathedral's rose sandstone at late light
Strasbourg Cathedral is built of pink Vosges sandstone, and the colour is the whole point: in low, late sun the façade shifts from dusty rose to glowing red. The square in front is tight, so the west front becomes a lesson in shooting details — the portals, the statuary, the lacework of the spire — rather than one impossible wide shot. Circle round towards the place du Château side for more breathing room.
December: the market season trade-off
Alsace in Advent is genuinely magical — lights strung across every lane, decorated façades, the smell of vin chaud — and genuinely mobbed. The Christmas markets bring the year's biggest crowds, and the famous streets are shoulder-to-shoulder by afternoon. If you want the decorations without the crush, shoot weekday mornings before the stalls open, or lean into blue hour, when the lights are on and the coach tours have gone to dinner. Decide what matters more to you: sparkle or space. You rarely get both in the same frame.
Add a village: Eguisheim and Riquewihr
Both are a short drive from Colmar and small enough to shoot in an hour or two. Eguisheim curls around its centre in concentric circular lanes — follow the rue des Remparts and the compositions build themselves.
