About Quimper & the Pointe du Raz
The Pointe du Raz is where France runs out. A spine of grey rock drops into the Raz de Sein, the channel between the mainland and the Île de Sein, with La Vieille lighthouse standing on its rock about a kilometre offshore and a permanent white line of broken water around it. It is a Grand Site de France, which in practice means the car park sits about eight hundred metres back and you walk the last stretch across low heath — good news for photographs, because the buildings are behind you the whole way. The wind is the constant: even a calm summer morning here moves hair and dresses, and a session should be planned around that rather than against it. Just north, the Baie des Trépassés opens between the Pointe du Raz and the Pointe du Van, a long curve of pale sand held in a bowl of dark cliffs, empty at first light and reachable by car. Inland the register changes entirely. Quimper, an hour east, is the old capital of Cornouaille: the twin spires of the Saint-Corentin cathedral over a compact medieval centre, the Odet and the Steïr threaded through it with low footbridges hung with flowers in summer, and the half-timbered length of Rue Kéréon leading straight at the cathedral front. Twenty minutes north of Quimper, Locronan is the third register again — a single Renaissance square of granite houses with the overhead cables buried, which is why film crews keep coming back and why it photographs cleanly at any hour. Best months are May, June and September; July and August are busy and the Pointe fills with coaches by eleven.

Top Photo Spots in Quimper
The most photogenic locations for your Quimper & the Pointe du Raz photoshoot
The granite square of Locronan
A Renaissance village square of grey granite houses with the overhead cables buried — which is why film crews keep coming back to it.
Best time: The first hour after sunrise, or bright overcast; midday sun blocks up the granite
Come early — coach groups arrive mid-morning in summer. The lanes downhill from the square give the same granite with far fewer people.
The Pointe du Raz headland path
A spine of grey rock running out into the Atlantic, with La Vieille lighthouse offshore and eight hundred metres of open heath to walk to reach it.
Best time: The last hour of light for the sun down the channel; sunrise for an empty path
Budget twenty minutes each way from the car park and wear real shoes. Parking is paid and the site can close in heavy weather — check before you set the hour.
The Baie des Trépassés
A long crescent of pale sand held between two headlands, backed by dune and marsh, and empty at first light even in August.
Best time: Evening, with the sun down the axis of the bay; low water for wet-sand reflections
You can park at the beach — no cliff walk needed, which suits long dresses. Check the tide: high water leaves only a strip of sand below the dune.
Quimper: Saint-Corentin and the Odet footbridges
Twin gothic spires over a compact medieval centre, half-timbered Rue Kéréon aimed straight at them, and flower-hung footbridges over the river.
Best time: Before ten in the morning for Rue Kéréon; late afternoon on the quays for the spires above the roofs
Shoot Rue Kéréon early — after ten it is a shopping street. The geraniums on the footbridges are only up from spring to autumn.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in France?
For peak-season dates — May through September, and especially Saturdays in Provence, the Loire or on the Riviera — book 6-12 months ahead. The best-reviewed photographers are often the first vendors to sell out after the venue itself. Shoulder-season and weekday weddings are far more flexible; three to four months is usually comfortable. If your date is closer than that, don't assume it's hopeless: availability shifts, and Photo France can check the whole vetted roster for your date at once instead of you emailing photographers one by one. When comparing, look at full wedding galleries rather than portfolio highlights — how a photographer handles a candlelit château dinner tells you more than their best ten frames.
How many hours of coverage do we need?
Work backwards from the moments you can't lose. An intimate ceremony with dinner fits in 4-5 hours: preparations, vows, couple portraits at golden hour, first toasts. A classic full wedding day — getting ready through the first dances — runs 8-10 hours. French weddings run famously long: dinner often starts at 9pm, the pièce montée arrives near midnight and the dancing goes until dawn; if your party will peak at 2am, budget coverage for it or arrange a set finishing time you're at peace with. One France-specific tip: in June and July the sun sets after 9:30pm, so schedule couple portraits around that golden window rather than the ceremony's end — your photographer will plan the whole timeline around it. Discuss your running order with your photographer and they'll recommend honest hours, not maximum hours.
Do photographers travel to any venue in France?
Yes — château and countryside weddings are the norm here, and photographers are used to travelling. Many are based in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux or Nice and take the TGV or drive out to Provence, the Loire, Normandy and the Alps routinely; others live in the wedding regions themselves. For remote venues, travel and accommodation costs are quoted transparently up front — for a Saturday wedding at a bastide deep in the Luberon, expect the photographer to arrive the day before rather than gamble on morning traffic, and that overnight stay appears in the quote. When you enquire through Photo France, mention the region and venue in the first message; we'll prioritise photographers already near your venue, which trims cost and adds local knowledge of the light and the layout.
How much does a photoshoot at the Pointe du Raz cost?
Professional photoshoots start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos. An hour is enough for the headland itself or for Quimper's old centre; two hours lets you pair the Pointe with the Baie des Trépassés next door, or link Quimper with Locronan. The Pointe is about an hour from Quimper, so build the drive into the plan.
What are the best photo spots around Quimper and the Pointe du Raz?
The path across the heath to the Pointe du Raz, with La Vieille lighthouse standing offshore; the pale sand crescent of the Baie des Trépassés under its dark cliffs; in Quimper, the twin spires of Saint-Corentin above Rue Kéréon and the flower-hung footbridges over the Odet; and the granite Renaissance square at Locronan, where the overhead cables are buried.
What is the best time of day and season for photos here?
Sunrise and the last hour of light. The Pointe faces west, so evening puts the sun straight down the channel and behind La Vieille, while dawn empties the path completely. May, June and September give long days and workable weather; July and August fill the car park by eleven. Winter light is beautiful and the wind is serious.
