Photographers in Château de Chambord

Chambord is one building and it is enough. The château sits in a walled hunting domaine the size of Paris, and the classic frame — the full façade doubled in the water of the Cosson canal — belongs to whoever arrives at dawn, when mist hangs over the park and the grounds are open long before the doors are. The great lawn on the north side gives clean, wide compositions with room to walk a couple through them; the light rakes across the façade in the morning and again in the last hour. Inside, the double-helix staircase attributed to Leonardo is the shot everyone wants — two spirals that never meet — and the rooftop terraces put you eye to eye with the forest of lantern towers and chimneys. Proposals work on the canal bank at first light. The car parks fill by late morning in season; by then your best frames are already done.
