The classic frame is the full façade doubled in the water of the Cosson canal. Then the great lawn on the north side, wide and clean with room to walk a couple through it; the tree-lined avenues of the domaine; the rooftop terraces among the lantern towers and chimneys; and, inside, the double-helix staircase attributed to Leonardo, two spirals that never meet.

Dawn, and it is not close. The grounds open long before the château doors, mist hangs over the park, and the canal is still enough to hold the reflection. Light rakes across the façade in the morning and again in the last hour. Car parks fill by late morning in season, and by then your best frames are already done.

Entry to the park and the car parks are paid separately from the château ticket, so check the day's hours and prices before you plan around them. Once inside, stay on the paths: most of the estate is a protected wildlife reserve.
