Photographers in Amboise

Amboise is the Loire Valley at walking pace: the Château Royal stands directly over the town, and the best frame of it is not inside but across the water — the north bank and the Île d'Or line up the château, the bridge and the river in one shot, and at sunset the stone goes amber while the Loire turns to hammered metal. Start there, then work back through the town: rue Nationale for café and market frames, the ramp up to the château for tighter portraits against the walls. Ten minutes uphill, the Clos Lucé — where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years — gives brick-and-tufa courtyards and gardens that stay quiet before eleven. Proposals work best on the riverbank at golden hour with the château behind; the sandbanks appear in summer when the river is low and add a foreground the postcards never show. Midday light is flat here — book the evening.
