About Arles & the Camargue
Arles is a working Provençal town with a Roman arena embedded in it. The amphitheatre is not a ruin on the edge of the city but the centre of it: two tiers of arches, three medieval watchtowers added on top, and streets that curve around its wall because they were built against it. Walk the outer ring at any hour for the arches, and go up onto the terraces for a view over the tiled roofs to the Rhône. A few minutes away the Place du Forum holds the café Van Gogh painted at night, repainted the same yellow ever since and unashamedly a tourist stop — it works best in the early evening when the plane trees are lit and the square is busy in a way that helps the frame.
