Professional photoshoots in Arcachon start from €279, with packages set by duration and the number of edited photos. One hour is right for a sunset session on the Dune du Pilat or a walk through the Ville d'Hiver; two hours lets you pair the town with the dune, or take the boat across to Cap Ferret. Most visitors book between one and two hours.

The ridge of the Dune du Pilat at sunset is the one everybody comes for, with the ocean on one side and the pine forest on the other. In town, the Ville d'Hiver gives carved verandas and pine shade, and the Jetée Thiers reaches out over the water under its red lamps. Across the bay, the oyster village of L'Herbe and the Cap Ferret lighthouse close the set.

In the Ville d'Hiver the pines throw hard patches of shade, which the morning handles better. May, June and September give warm light without the August car parks and heat.

It is a real climb, about a hundred metres of loose sand, and there is no permanent staircase because the dune keeps moving inland and buries what is built on it. Wooden steps are installed for part of the year only, so check whether they are in place. Allow fifteen to twenty minutes up, take water, and expect a paid car park that fills by mid-morning in summer.

Every age works — the format just adapts. First and second birthdays are cake-smash territory: short sessions, morning light, a washable location like a beach or a garden lawn, and parents nearby with wipes and a spare outfit. Ages three to six shine in adventure formats, where the shoot is disguised as a game and the photographer is just the funny grown-up with a camera. School-age kids often love being the star of a 'magazine shoot' — give them small missions and they deliver poses you couldn't direct if you tried. From around ten, involve them in planning: kids who chose the location and their outfit cooperate at triple the rate. Whatever the age, schedule around meals and naps, and tell your Photo France photographer about your child's current obsessions — a knight fan photographs differently at Carcassonne than a mermaid expert does at Biarritz.

Then the photographer stops asking for poses — that's the entire trick. Kids-specialist photographers open sessions by not photographing at all: five minutes of showing the camera, letting the child press the shutter, becoming the least threatening adult present. Then the shoot becomes a game with rules the child controls — hide behind the fountain and pop out, race me to that boat, show me your monster face. Shyness reads as delicacy in photos when nobody forces eye contact with the lens; some of the most beautiful kids' portraits are of a child absorbed in shell-collecting on a Biarritz beach or watching the Luxembourg Gardens puppet show, unaware of the camera. Parents help most by being relaxed themselves and letting the photographer set the rhythm. The 'won't pose' kid usually refuses to leave when the session ends.
