About The Dune du Pilat ridge at sunset
Get directionsThe Pilat is a wave of sand nearly three kilometres long, standing about a hundred metres above the beach and moving inland a few metres every year. It is one of the very few places in France where you can put two people on a clean line against nothing but sky and water.
The ridge is the frame. Walk south along it away from the access point and the crowd thins within minutes; from the crest the Banc d'Arguin lies pale in the water, the Cap Ferret peninsula closes the horizon, and behind you the forest starts at the foot of the slope. The steep seaward face gives a second, more graphic option, all texture and shadow.
This is a sunset location, and only just: the light does its work in the last half hour, when the sand turns apricot and the ridge line reads as a single curve. Getting up is a real climb through soft sand, the wooden staircase is only installed for part of the year, and the car park is paid and fills by mid-morning in high summer.

Tips
Allow fifteen to twenty minutes to climb and check whether the seasonal staircase is in place. Sand gets everywhere, so keep lens changes to a minimum and bring water.
