About Arcachon & the Dune du Pilat
Arcachon is an hour from Bordeaux and holds two very different sessions in one place. The first is the Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe — a hundred metres of pale sand running nearly three kilometres, the Atlantic and the Banc d'Arguin sandbank on one side, a dark pine forest on the other. Sunset is the shot: the ridge empties as the light goes, the sand turns apricot, and a couple stands against nothing but sky. The dune moves inland a few metres a year and buries what it reaches, so there is no permanent access — the wooden staircase is seasonal, and the rest of the year it is a climb through soft sand. The second session is the town. The Ville d'Hiver is a hillside of some three hundred nineteenth-century villas built among the pines for winter guests, all carved balconies and verandas, with a Moorish park above and a footbridge over the ravine; below it the Ville d'Été runs along the water, where the Jetée Thiers reaches out under its red lamps. Around the bay lie the oyster villages — L'Herbe with its coloured huts and its little Algerian chapel — and the red-and-white Cap Ferret lighthouse above the pines. Practical notes: the bay is tidal, and low water leaves mud flats rather than the postcard; the dune car park is paid and fills by mid-morning in July and August; and the boat from the Jetée Thiers to Cap Ferret takes about half an hour, so check the timetable before planning both shores in one evening.

Top Photo Spots in Arcachon
The most photogenic locations for your Arcachon & the Dune du Pilat photoshoot
The Dune du Pilat ridge at sunset
A hundred metres of pale sand with the Atlantic on one side and a pine forest on the other — the tallest dune in Europe, and its best half hour is the last.
Best time: The last half hour before sunset; avoid midday in July and August
Allow fifteen to twenty minutes to climb and check whether the seasonal staircase is in place. Sand gets everywhere, so keep lens changes to a minimum and bring water.
The Ville d'Hiver villas
Three hundred nineteenth-century villas built among the pines for winter guests — carved balconies, quiet lanes and an iron observatory above them.
Best time: Morning, before the pines turn to hard patchy shade
These are lived-in houses on residential lanes — keep to the street and keep the group small. The Parc Mauresque above gives the open view when the lanes feel too enclosed.
The Jetée Thiers and the seafront
The town's main pier walking out over the bay under red-and-white lamps, with the beach on both sides and the dune pale on the horizon.
Best time: Early morning for an empty pier, the hour before sunset for the lanterns
Boats to Cap Ferret and the Île aux Oiseaux leave from here and the crossing takes about half an hour, so check the timetable before adding the far shore to the same session.
L'Herbe and the Cap Ferret lighthouse
An oyster village of coloured huts and a white Algerian chapel, with the red-and-white lighthouse standing over the pines a few kilometres south.
Best time: Early morning in the lanes; check the tide for the foreshore
The village is car-free and its lanes are private working ground between the huts — stay on the public path. The lighthouse has its own opening hours and ticket, so check them first.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in France?
For peak-season dates — May through September, and especially Saturdays in Provence, the Loire or on the Riviera — book 6-12 months ahead. The best-reviewed photographers are often the first vendors to sell out after the venue itself. Shoulder-season and weekday weddings are far more flexible; three to four months is usually comfortable. If your date is closer than that, don't assume it's hopeless: availability shifts, and Photo France can check the whole vetted roster for your date at once instead of you emailing photographers one by one. When comparing, look at full wedding galleries rather than portfolio highlights — how a photographer handles a candlelit château dinner tells you more than their best ten frames.
How many hours of coverage do we need?
Work backwards from the moments you can't lose. An intimate ceremony with dinner fits in 4-5 hours: preparations, vows, couple portraits at golden hour, first toasts. A classic full wedding day — getting ready through the first dances — runs 8-10 hours. French weddings run famously long: dinner often starts at 9pm, the pièce montée arrives near midnight and the dancing goes until dawn; if your party will peak at 2am, budget coverage for it or arrange a set finishing time you're at peace with. One France-specific tip: in June and July the sun sets after 9:30pm, so schedule couple portraits around that golden window rather than the ceremony's end — your photographer will plan the whole timeline around it. Discuss your running order with your photographer and they'll recommend honest hours, not maximum hours.
Do photographers travel to any venue in France?
Yes — château and countryside weddings are the norm here, and photographers are used to travelling. Many are based in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux or Nice and take the TGV or drive out to Provence, the Loire, Normandy and the Alps routinely; others live in the wedding regions themselves. For remote venues, travel and accommodation costs are quoted transparently up front — for a Saturday wedding at a bastide deep in the Luberon, expect the photographer to arrive the day before rather than gamble on morning traffic, and that overnight stay appears in the quote. When you enquire through Photo France, mention the region and venue in the first message; we'll prioritise photographers already near your venue, which trims cost and adds local knowledge of the light and the layout.
How much does a photoshoot in Arcachon cost?
Professional photoshoots in Arcachon start from €310, with packages set by duration and the number of edited photos. One hour is right for a sunset session on the Dune du Pilat or a walk through the Ville d'Hiver; two hours lets you pair the town with the dune, or take the boat across to Cap Ferret. Most visitors book between one and two hours.
What are the best photo spots in Arcachon?
The ridge of the Dune du Pilat at sunset is the one everybody comes for, with the ocean on one side and the pine forest on the other. In town, the Ville d'Hiver gives carved verandas and pine shade, and the Jetée Thiers reaches out over the water under its red lamps. Across the bay, the oyster village of L'Herbe and the Cap Ferret lighthouse close the set.
What is the best time of day for photos in Arcachon?
Sunset on the dune and early morning in the town. The dune faces the Atlantic, so the last half hour turns the sand apricot and puts anyone on the ridge against clean sky. In the Ville d'Hiver the pines throw hard patches of shade, which the morning handles better. May, June and September give warm light without the August car parks and heat.
