The Japanese Garden

A free, calm Japanese garden by the Larvotto beaches — stone lanterns, a waterfall and wooden bridges over a carp pond.

About The Japanese Garden

Get directions

On Avenue Princesse-Grace, between the Grimaldi Forum and the Larvotto beaches, Monaco keeps a small Japanese garden laid out in the 1990s by the landscape architect Yasuo Beppu: a carp pond, a waterfall over boulders, wooden bridges, stone lanterns, clipped pines and a tea house, all on well under a hectare and walled off from the traffic outside.

It is the opposite of the rest of Monaco — green, small and quiet — and that is exactly why it works for a session: soft, even light under the trees, frames that need no crowd management, and a change of mood after the harbour and the casino. Entry is free, and it opens every day from nine in the morning until early evening.

Best time to shoot

Morning, when the light is soft and the paths are quiet

Tips

A public garden with a calm etiquette: a small group, nothing set up on the bridges, and keep off the raked gravel. Ten minutes' walk from the casino.
