Avignon's defining frame is taken from outside the walls. Cross to the Île de la Barthelasse — by the free river shuttle in season or over the Pont Daladier on foot — and from the bank facing the city everything falls into one composition: the Pont Saint-Bénézet stopping abruptly mid-river, the ramparts behind it, the bulk of the Palais des Papes above, and the gilded Virgin on the cathedral tower catching the last light.

The river does half the work. On a still evening the Rhône holds a full reflection of the lit facades, and the four surviving arches of the bridge give the foreground a subject that is unmistakably this city and nowhere else. A couple on the bank, small against that skyline, is the frame worth the crossing.

Sunset then blue hour is the sequence: the sun drops behind you to the west and lights the stone warm, then the floodlights come on while the sky is still deep blue — that overlap is about twenty minutes and it is the strongest light of the day here. Winter evenings arrive early and are often clearest; the mistral flattens the river to a mirror but makes the bank cold and hard on hair and fabric.

Practical: check the shuttle's running times and season before relying on it — outside the summer timetable the walk over the Pont Daladier is the reliable route, about fifteen minutes from the walls. The bank is unlit, uneven and can be muddy after rain, so bring a light for the walk back and shoes that cope. Stay off the private campsite frontages further downstream.
