Photographers in Avignon

Avignon's defining frame is shot from outside the city: cross to the Île de la Barthelasse on the free ferry or the Daladier bridge, and the whole skyline lines up across the Rhône — the Pont Saint-Bénézet stopping mid-river, the Palais des Papes and the cathedral's golden Virgin above it — best at sunset and into blue hour, when the walls are lit. Inside, go early: Place du Palais at eight is empty enough to use the palace facade's full height, and the Rocher des Doms garden above gives river views with shade for families. Rue des Teinturiers, cobbles along a stream with waterwheels and plane trees, is the intimate counterweight to all that stone. Two seasonal notes decide everything: in July the theatre festival papers every wall and fills every lane, wonderful for reportage and hopeless for quiet portraits, and the mistral blows hard here — it polishes the sky but punishes veils and loose hair on the bridge.
