Ten minutes uphill from the centre, on the Avenue Paul Cézanne, a small terraced public garden looks straight east at the Montagne Sainte-Victoire across the Arc valley. This is the ground Cézanne worked from, and reproductions of the paintings are set along the terraces so you can stand where he stood and see how little has changed.

For a session it gives what nowhere in the city centre can: distance. Olive trees and low walls in the foreground, the whole valley in the middle, and a mountain ridge closing the frame. A couple silhouetted against the ridge at last light is the picture; a wider frame with the terraces stepping down toward the valley is the quieter alternative.

Sunset is the whole reason to come. The sun sets behind you, in the west, so the mountain takes the last direct light head-on and shifts through orange to a hard pink before it goes flat — that colour is the one in the paintings, and it lasts maybe fifteen minutes. Clear days after a mistral give the sharpest ridge; summer haze softens it considerably.

Practical: it is a public garden with fixed opening hours that change with the season, and it closes near dusk — check the day's closing time before building a sunset around it, because it can shut before the colour arrives. Parking on the avenue is limited; the walk up from the old town is about twenty-five minutes and genuinely uphill. Bring a light for the walk back down.
