Place d'Albertas and its single fountain

Place d'Albertas is barely a square: a small rectangle off the Rue Espariat, laid out in the eighteenth century as a single deliberate composition, with matching honey-stone facades on three sides, wrought-iron balconies and a plain fountain set in the middle of the cobbles. It was designed as a view rather than a thoroughfare, which is exactly why it photographs like a stage set.

The scale is the point. There is nothing to compose around except the couple, the fountain and the facades, and the enclosure means no sky, no traffic and no visual noise. Shoot square-on to the far facade for symmetry, from a corner to let the ironwork run diagonally, and low across the cobbles with the fountain in the foreground.

Light arrives late and leaves early because the buildings are tall relative to the space: for most of the day the square is in soft, even shade, which is a gift in a city where summer sun is brutal. Mid-morning gets a wedge of direct light onto the upper facades; overcast days are genuinely ideal. Chamber concerts are sometimes held here in summer, which fills the square with chairs.

Practical: it is a working public square with residents' doorways all around, so ten focused minutes, quietly, is the right way to use it. Cars park here at times, which can wreck the wide frame — walk past first and check before committing. It sits two minutes from the Cours Mirabeau, so it slots naturally into a walking session rather than being a destination on its own.
