On the day, the photographer arrives early and blends in — photographing the view like any tourist — while actually tracking you. The proposal itself is captured from a distance with a long lens, then the photographer reveals themselves and continues with a celebratory mini-session: the ring, the happy tears, the toast. Within days you receive a gallery that starts seconds before the question and ends with the two of you glowing. No — discretion is the whole craft. French landmarks work in your favour here: at the Trocadéro, on the Seine bridges or in Èze's garden, everyone is holding a camera, so one more photographer attracts zero attention. Your photographer will scout the spot beforehand, position themselves naturally, and never make eye contact with you until the ring is out. In hundreds of proposals arranged through our markets, partners almost never suspect a thing before the reveal — and the genuine shock on their face in the photos is exactly why this works so well. If you're especially worried, choose a busier spot or a photographer working with a longer lens; we'll advise on both.

It depends where you are. The Côte d'Azur enjoys around 300 sunny days a year, so an Èze or Antibes proposal has excellent odds; Paris and Normandy are less predictable, which is why every proposal plan comes with a backup: an alternative sheltered location (the arcades of the Palais-Royal, a covered passage, a museum courtyard), a flexible time window on the same day, or a free reschedule to the next day if conditions are truly impossible. Overcast light is actually soft and flattering for photos, and a light drizzle on the Seine quays has produced some very cinematic proposals — so a grey sky alone is no reason to panic. Your photographer will talk you through the options the day before, and the decision always stays yours.

The rampart walk itself — roughly two kilometres, free and open, with the sea on one side and slate roofs on the other; the ranks of weathered wooden posts standing in the sand along the Plage du Sillon; Fort National on its rock; the Plage de Bon-Secours under the northern wall; and the granite lanes of the intra-muros when the light asks for stone instead of sky. Across the bay, Dinard adds Belle Époque villas and striped bathing tents.

They set the schedule. The tidal range here is among the largest in Europe: at low water you can walk out to Fort National and to the Grand Bé, the island where Chateaubriand is buried; at high water both are cut off and anyone who mistimed it waits several hours. Read the tide table for the actual day and let it choose the hour — a local photographer does this before proposing a time. On a big spring tide with wind behind it, waves break clean over the sea wall along the Sillon and the town closes the promenade: spectacular, genuinely dangerous, and a photograph to take from well back.
