Saint-Martin-de-Ré's harbour inside Vauban's star-shaped fortifications, and the bell tower above it for roofs and water; the whitewashed lanes with green shutters and hollyhocks along the walls; Ars-en-Ré's black-and-white steeple, painted that way as a seamark; the salt marshes at dusk; and the Phare des Baleines at the western tip. In La Rochelle: the harbour mouth guarded by the Tour Saint-Nicolas and the Tour de la Chaîne, with the Tour de la Lanterne behind and arcaded streets that work in rain.

May, June and September. The island is at its emptiest and most photogenic outside July and August, the hollyhocks along the walls flower through June and into July, and the light is famously clean because nothing on the island is tall enough to block it. Sunrise and the hour before sunset are the working slots: the harbour is still, the lanes are empty, and at dusk the salt marshes turn into sheets of tinted mirror.

The island is joined to La Rochelle by a three-kilometre toll bridge; the toll is per car and the queue is real on July and August weekends, so plan the crossing outside the middle of the day. Once there, most sessions move by bike — the island is flat and the cycle paths go everywhere. The salt marshes are working ground: the raised paths between the pans belong to the salt farmers, so ask before stepping onto them and keep off the drying areas. Photographed from the public tracks at dusk, they are one of the best frames on the island anyway.

Every age works — the format just adapts. First and second birthdays are cake-smash territory: short sessions, morning light, a washable location like a beach or a garden lawn, and parents nearby with wipes and a spare outfit. Ages three to six shine in adventure formats, where the shoot is disguised as a game and the photographer is just the funny grown-up with a camera. School-age kids often love being the star of a 'magazine shoot' — give them small missions and they deliver poses you couldn't direct if you tried. From around ten, involve them in planning: kids who chose the location and their outfit cooperate at triple the rate. Whatever the age, schedule around meals and naps, and tell your Photo France photographer about your child's current obsessions — a knight fan photographs differently at Carcassonne than a mermaid expert does at Biarritz.

Then the photographer stops asking for poses — that's the entire trick. Kids-specialist photographers open sessions by not photographing at all: five minutes of showing the camera, letting the child press the shutter, becoming the least threatening adult present. Then the shoot becomes a game with rules the child controls — hide behind the fountain and pop out, race me to that boat, show me your monster face. Shyness reads as delicacy in photos when nobody forces eye contact with the lens; some of the most beautiful kids' portraits are of a child absorbed in shell-collecting on a Biarritz beach or watching the Luxembourg Gardens puppet show, unaware of the camera. Parents help most by being relaxed themselves and letting the photographer set the rhythm. The 'won't pose' kid usually refuses to leave when the session ends.
