The island is at its emptiest and most photogenic outside July and August, the hollyhocks along the walls flower through June and into July, and the light is famously clean because nothing on the island is tall enough to block it. Sunrise and the hour before sunset are the working slots: the harbour is still, the lanes are empty, and at dusk the salt marshes turn into sheets of tinted mirror.

The island is joined to La Rochelle by a three-kilometre toll bridge; the toll is per car and the queue is real on July and August weekends, so plan the crossing outside the middle of the day. Once there, most sessions move by bike — the island is flat and the cycle paths go everywhere. The salt marshes are working ground: the raised paths between the pans belong to the salt farmers, so ask before stepping onto them and keep off the drying areas. Photographed from the public tracks at dusk, they are one of the best frames on the island anyway.

For Paris in spring and early summer, and for Provence during lavender season (late June to mid-July), book 4-8 weeks ahead — these are peak dates and the best photographers' calendars fill early. The Loire, Alsace and the Riviera outside August are more flexible; two to three weeks is usually enough.
