Plan the session for the outside. As at Versailles, professional and commercial photography in the rooms is not something to promise a client without written permission from the estate, and the interiors are busy with visitors from opening. The good news is that Chenonceau's exterior is the picture everyone actually wants: the gallery on its five arches over the Cher, the two formal gardens, the tree-lined approach, the farm and the maze. Everything else follows from there.

Opening time. The gates open early in summer and later in winter, and for the first half hour the plane-tree avenue from the car park is empty and the Cher is usually still enough for a clean reflection — the frame from the west bank downstream, with the gallery repeated upside down in the water, is the one everyone comes for. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon belongs to the coaches. The gardens hold up in flat overcast light too, so a grey Loire day is not a lost day.

Chaumont-sur-Loire is ten minutes away, stands high above the river with a terrace view along the water, and runs its Garden Festival from spring into autumn. And do not overlook the river itself: the Loire's sandbanks and willow islands give soft, quiet frames at dusk that no château can.
