About Beaune & the Côte d'Or

Beaune is small, walled and almost entirely about wine, which makes it unusually easy to photograph well in a couple of hours. The set piece is the Hôtel-Dieu, the fifteenth-century Hospices de Beaune: an inner courtyard closed on four sides by timber galleries under a steep roof of glazed tiles laid in black, gold, red and green diamonds. It is a ticketed museum, it opens at nine and the courtyard is the single most photographed square metre in Burgundy, so a session goes in at opening or waits until the last hour. Outside, the ramparts walk and the lanes around Place Carnot and the Basilique Notre-Dame give warm limestone, iron shop signs and almost no crowd before ten. Then the vineyards, which is why people come: the Route des Grands Crus runs the slope from Beaune up through Savigny, Aloxe-Corton and on to Vougeot, and down the other way through Pommard, Volnay and Meursault, each village announced by a stone cross and a wall of vines with a name on it. The Château du Clos de Vougeot sits alone in the middle of its walled clos about twenty minutes north — sixteenth-century stone, no village around it, a horizon of vines in every direction. Seasons matter more here than in most French towns. Vines are bare sticks from November to April; the green is in from June; the pull is late September and the first half of October, when the leaves turn gold and rust and the harvest is running, and that is also the fortnight when every room in the Côte d'Or is booked.

Top Photo Spots in Beaune

The most photogenic locations for your Beaune & the Côte d'Or photoshoot

The Hospices de Beaune courtyard

The glazed-tile roof over the Hôtel-Dieu's timber galleries — black, gold, red and green diamonds, and the one frame everybody comes to Burgundy for.

Best time: The first hour after the nine o'clock opening; soft overcast beats full sun on the tiles

Everyone needs a ticket, and tripod and commercial-shoot rules change with the season — check with the museum before the day. Do the courtyard first, then walk to Place Carnot for free, uncrowded stone.

The Route des Grands Crus above Pommard and Volnay

Vine rows stepping up the slope with a stone cross at the top of the track — the Côte de Beaune in its plainest, best form, ten minutes from the town gate.

Best time: Sunrise for warm light straight down the rows; late September to mid-October for colour

Stay on the tracks — every row is a private working parcel, and harvest crews have right of way. A stone cross or cabotte hut on the skyline gives the frame something to sit on.

Château du Clos de Vougeot

A sixteenth-century château standing alone in the middle of its own walled vineyard, with no village around it and vines to the horizon.

Best time: Late afternoon, when the light rakes the stone and the Côte de Nuits slope warms up behind

Twenty minutes north of Beaune by car — book the longer session if you want it. Check opening before you go: the château closes for private dinners and events.

Meursault and the white-wine slope

A working wine village with a spire, a stone-arched square and the Côte de Beaune's white-wine parcels running up behind it.

Best time: Early morning for the village lanes; the last hour of light for the slope above it

Courtyards and cellar doors belong to working growers — shoot from the street and ask before stepping in. The village is quietest in the middle of a summer day, but the light then is poor.

Frequently asked questions

Is the studio rental included in the price?

It depends on the photographer, and their Photo France profile states it explicitly — read the package description before booking. Photographers with their own studios include the space in the session price; those who rent third-party studios either build the cost in or list it as a separate line so you can choose the space tier. When comparing prices, compare the whole package: a session that looks €50 cheaper but adds studio rental on top isn't cheaper. If a quote is ambiguous, ask directly in the booking chat — 'is the studio included, and which studio is it?' — and you'll get a concrete answer with photos of the space. Address and access details arrive with your booking confirmation.

How many outfit changes are included?

The practical limit is time, not a rule: in a 60-minute studio session, two to three outfits is the sweet spot — each change costs five minutes plus a lighting adjustment, and more changes than that eat into actual shooting. For headshot sessions, bring three tops in different tones against the planned backdrop and change only from the waist up in seconds. Portfolio and branding sessions that genuinely need four or more looks should book 90 minutes or two hours; your photographer will say so honestly when you describe the goal. Studio tip: bring everything pressed and on hangers, arrive in the simplest look, and start with it — the first fifteen minutes are warm-up frames anyway, and your strongest outfit deserves your warmed-up confidence.

Can we shoot a mix of studio and outdoor in one session?

Yes, and in French cities it's a particularly good deal because the two worlds sit minutes apart. Paris studios cluster in the central arrondissements and the Marais, so an hour of controlled studio light can flow straight into thirty minutes among Haussmann façades, a covered passage or a Seine quay; in Nice, studios sit minutes from the Promenade des Anglais and the old town. The combination suits personal branding perfectly: crisp headshots from the studio half, natural in-context frames from the outdoor half, one consistent editing style across both. Book a 90-minute or 2-hour session for this format and mention the split up front, so the photographer books studio time for the right window and plans the outdoor route for the light you'll have when you step outside.

How much does a photoshoot in Beaune cost?

Professional photoshoots in Beaune start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — a one-hour session covering the Hospices courtyard and the old town, or two hours that add the vineyard slope above Pommard and Volnay. Most couples book 60 to 90 minutes; anything that includes the Clos de Vougeot needs the longer option.

What are the best photo spots in Beaune and the Côte d'Or?

The glazed-tile courtyard of the Hospices de Beaune is the signature frame, with the ramparts walk and the lanes around Place Carnot for warm limestone without a crowd. Outside town, the Route des Grands Crus gives vine rows and stone crosses at Pommard, Volnay and Meursault, and the Château du Clos de Vougeot stands alone inside its walled vineyard twenty minutes north.

What is the best time of day and season for photos in Beaune?

Early morning in town: the Hospices courtyard is quietest in the first hour after it opens at nine, and the old streets are empty before ten. In the vineyards the last two hours of daylight rake across the slope and separate every row. For season, the last ten days of September and the first half of October give harvest activity and gold leaves; the vines are bare from November to April.
