Château du Clos de Vougeot
A sixteenth-century château standing alone in the middle of its own walled vineyard, with no village around it and vines to the horizon.
About Château du Clos de Vougeot
Get directionsThe Clos de Vougeot is a fifty-hectare walled vineyard planted by Cistercian monks, and the château sits in the middle of it. That is the whole appeal: there is no village, no car park in shot, no modern building anywhere near — just a long low range of sixteenth-century stone, a stone wall running away on both sides, and vines in every direction.
The classic frame is from the track on the Beaune side, with the château small in the middle distance and the rows leading the eye to it. Come closer for the courtyard and the great cellar with its four medieval wine presses, which is where the ticket takes you. The building faces roughly south, so morning light comes across the front and evening light rakes the wall — both good, and evening adds the whole slope of the Côte de Nuits going warm behind it.
It is about twenty minutes north of Beaune by car up the wine road, which is why a session that includes it needs the two-hour booking rather than the one-hour. The interior is ticketed and closes for lunch and for private events — the château hosts the Chevaliers du Tastevin dinners, and on those days it is not open at all.
The surrounding parcels are grand cru and famously valuable. Photograph from the tracks and the road, and do not step into the rows.
Best time to shoot
Late afternoon, when the light rakes the stone and the Côte de Nuits slope warms up behind
Tips
Twenty minutes north of Beaune by car — book the longer session if you want it. Check opening before you go: the château closes for private dinners and events.
