Get directionsThe Château des Baux occupies the whole top of the rock, and the plateau it stands on is the widest view in the Alpilles: the valley and the olive plain to the south, the white chaos of the Val d'Enfer quarries to the north, and the village roofs immediately below. Ruined keeps, a dovecote cut into the rock and long stretches of open stone give you architecture and horizon in the same place.
It is ticketed and it keeps posted hours, which vary by season, so build both into the plan — and be at the gate when it opens, because the plateau is exposed and by midday in summer the light is hard and the site is full. Late afternoon is the other window, with warm light across the rock and the valley going hazy blue.
The plateau is genuinely exposed: no shade, uneven stone underfoot, and the mistral funnels along the ridge in winter and spring hard enough to make standing still an effort. Flat shoes are not optional here, and a dress needs a plan. Look for the edges of the plateau where the ground drops away — that is where the frame has the valley in it rather than just sky.
