The causeway and shepherds' meadows at dawn

Pull back from the island and the photograph changes character: from the salt meadows along the southern shore, the mount becomes a silhouette floating above grassland where the famous pré-salé sheep graze. A long lens compresses sheep, meadow and abbey into one stacked frame; a wide one puts the mount small and improbable on the horizon. The footbridge to the island gives the other classic — the walkway's lines running straight at the mount, empty at dawn and streaming with visitors by mid-morning.

Dawn is the honest recommendation twice over. The light comes up behind or beside the mount depending on season, morning mist off the bay turns the whole scene into layers, and the sheep are out and moving before the day warms. By afternoon the light is flat on this side and the foregrounds fill with parked coaches and day-trippers.

Logistics are simple but rigid: private cars stop at the mainland car parks, and the shuttle to the island starts too late for first light — walking the causeway is the dawn option, an easy flat three kilometres. The meadows are working farmland: stay on paths and field edges, and photograph the sheep from a distance rather than walking into the flock.
