On the Falaise d'Amont, next to the chapel, Les Jardins d'Étretat are a set of terraced gardens where box and yew have been clipped into rolling wave forms, spirals and abstract faces, with contemporary sculpture set among them. The garden hangs on the cliff edge, so the openings between the hedges frame the Porte d'Aval and the sea across the bay.

It is a very different kind of frame from the rest of Étretat: sculptural, green, enclosed, with a horizon dropped in through gaps rather than filling everything. The clipped forms make strong foregrounds and natural vignettes, and the terraces are stepped, so there are elevated positions to shoot down from — rare on a coast where everything else is flat grass or beach.

Soft light suits it best. Overcast days are genuinely ideal, because the box holds colour and detail without harsh shadow, and the garden becomes the reliable option when wind or rain make the clifftops miserable. Early and late direct sun rakes across the topiary and picks out the wave forms; midday sun flattens them and blows out the sea beyond.

Practical: it is a ticketed private garden with fixed opening hours that vary by season — check them, and check the rules before planning a shoot rather than a visit, because photography beyond ordinary visitor use normally needs their agreement. Paths are narrow gravel and there are steps between terraces. It is right beside the chapel at the top of the Amont steps, so it pairs naturally with the clifftop frames in one climb.
