The Route des Crêtes over Cap Canaille

The D141 climbs out of Cassis and runs east along the crest of Cap Canaille toward La Ciotat, following the top of the highest sea cliff in France. It is a driving road with laybys and viewpoints all the way, each one giving a different composition: the whole bay of Cassis with the village and the calanques beyond, sheer drops of ochre rock, and open Mediterranean from nearly four hundred metres up.

For a session it gives what nothing at sea level can: height and empty foreground. Low walls and rock edges give something to sit or stand on, the scrub is warm-toned, and the distance to the horizon means a couple can be silhouetted with nothing behind them but sea and sky. The best pull-ins are the ones facing back west toward Cassis.

Sunset is the reason to drive it. The sun goes down over the bay ahead of you and the cliff face itself turns from ochre to deep red in the last light — the same rock that photographs so well from the harbour, seen from on top of it. Early morning is clear and empty but the light is behind you rather than on the view.

Practical and important: the road closes in strong mistral and on high fire-risk days, and it closes without much notice — check whether it is open on the day before building an evening around it. It is narrow, winding and popular with cyclists and motorcyclists; park only in the marked pull-ins, never on the carriageway. There are no barriers at most viewpoints and the drop is sheer, so keep well back from the edge, especially with children or in wind.
