Engagement Photographer in Tours

An engagement shoot in Tours is old town and river — the timbered lanes off the Place Plumereau, the arcaded Cloître de la Psalette by the cathedral, then the gravel banks of the Loire.

About Tours & the Loire châteaux

Tours is where people actually stay when they come for the châteaux, and it earns a session of its own before anyone gets in the car. The old quarter around the Place Plumereau is a full square of fifteenth-century half-timbering with café terraces filling the middle of it; the lanes off it — Rue du Grand Marché, Rue Briçonnet, the Place Saint-Pierre-le-Puellier — are quieter and give the same timber and tuffeau stone without the tables. Ten minutes east, the Cathédrale Saint-Gatien puts up a flamboyant west front between two towers finished in the Renaissance, and the little Cloître de la Psalette beside it is a calm, arcaded courtyard almost nobody walks into. The Loire itself is two minutes further: long gravel banks, the Pont Wilson's stone arches, and the widest sky in the city, which is the reason evening sessions end here. Then the châteaux. Villandry, fifteen kilometres west, is not really about the house — it is six terraced gardens, an ornamental kitchen garden laid out in coloured squares of vegetable, box hedges and a water mirror above them, at their fullest from June to October. Azay-le-Rideau, a little further on, is a small Renaissance château standing in its own reflection on an island in the Indre, ringed by a wooded park. Both are ticketed, both set their own rules for professional photography and drone work, and both are far quieter in the first hour after opening — check the current conditions before a shoot is promised inside the gates.

Top Photo Spots in Tours

The most photogenic locations for your Tours & the Loire châteaux photoshoot

Place Plumereau and the old town

A full square of fifteenth-century half-timbering with café terraces in the middle, and quieter timbered lanes running off it.

Best time: Before 10am, when the terraces are laid but empty and light comes down the streets

The lanes one street off the square give the same timber without the tables. Large rounded cobbles — mind heels and backward walking.

Cathédrale Saint-Gatien and the Loire quays

A flamboyant west front between two Renaissance towers, a quiet arcaded cloister beside it, and the river five minutes north.

Best time: Late afternoon for the facade, and the half hour after sunset on the riverbank

The Psalette cloister next door is ticketed and shaded all day — check its rules first. The Loire bank holds colour long after sunset.

Château de Villandry gardens

Six terraced gardens west of Tours, including an ornamental kitchen garden laid out in coloured squares of vegetables and box.

Best time: June to October for the kitchen garden; first hour after opening, overcast light

Shoot the potager from the upper terrace for geometry and from inside for corridors. Ticketed with its own shoot rules — check first.

Château d'Azay-le-Rideau

A small Renaissance château standing in its own reflection on an island in the Indre, inside a wooded English park.

Best time: Early morning for still water and light on the facade; autumn mist off the Indre

Still water is the shot — wind kills it, and mornings are calmer. State-run and ticketed, with its own photography rules: check first.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we book our engagement photoshoot?

For Paris in spring and early summer, and for Provence during lavender season (late June to mid-July), book 4-8 weeks ahead — these are peak dates and the best photographers' calendars fill early. The Loire, Alsace and the Riviera outside August are more flexible; two to three weeks is usually enough. If your dates are fixed (say, you're combining the shoot with a wedding scouting trip), book as soon as you know them — you can always fine-tune the time and locations later in the chat with your photographer. Last-minute requests are still worth trying: Photo France can often match you with an available photographer within days.

Can we use engagement photos for our save-the-dates?

Yes — that's one of the most popular reasons couples book an engagement session. You receive high-resolution files with personal usage rights, perfect for printed cards, wedding websites, guest apps and social media announcements. Tell your photographer in advance that save-the-dates are the goal: they'll deliberately shoot some wider compositions with negative space for text, a mix of portrait and landscape orientations, and a few images that work at small print sizes. The two of you small against the Eiffel Tower at dawn, or framed by a lavender row in Gordes, makes an announcement nobody forgets. Delivery is typically within days, so the cards can go out quickly.

What's the difference between an engagement and couples session?

Practically, they're the same product — same duration, same pricing from €299, same photographer pool. The difference is intent. An engagement session usually has deliverables in mind: save-the-dates, a wedding website, images that match the aesthetic of your upcoming wedding. Your photographer will plan for that — cleaner compositions, ring details, perhaps echoing the color palette of your wedding venue. A couples session is freer: it documents your trip and your relationship as they are, with more candid wandering. Tell us which one you mean when booking and the session gets planned accordingly; plenty of couples honestly book it as both.

How much does a photoshoot in Tours cost?

Professional photoshoots in Tours start from €310. Packages depend on duration and the number of edited photos, roughly €310 to €450 for one to two hours in the city — the Place Plumereau, the cathedral and the Loire bank. Sessions that travel out to Villandry or Azay-le-Rideau need longer and are quoted on the route.

What are the best photo spots in Tours?

The Place Plumereau and the half-timbered lanes around it, the flamboyant west front of the Cathédrale Saint-Gatien and the quiet arcaded Cloître de la Psalette beside it, and the Loire bank by the Pont Wilson for open sky at the end of the day. Out of town: the terraced gardens of Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau on its island.

What is the best time of day for photos in Tours?

Morning for the old town, when the Place Plumereau is set up but still empty and the tuffeau stone takes low light well; evening for the Loire, where the bank is wide open to the west and the river holds colour long after sunset. The château gardens are quietest in the first hour after they open.
