Couples Photographer in Sarlat

A couples session here walks the old town first and drives the valley after — Beynac two hundred metres above the water, and clipped boxwood along the Marqueyssac terrace.

About Sarlat & the Dordogne

Sarlat-la-Canéda has one of the densest medieval centres left in France — around sixty listed buildings inside a few hundred metres, all in the same warm ochre limestone, all roofed in heavy grey lauze slabs. Nothing modern intrudes because the whole centre was restored as a block in the 1960s, so a session here can walk from the Place de la Liberté up the Rue des Consuls and back down past the Maison de La Boétie without a single parked car in frame. Morning is the moment: the Saturday market fills the square with people and awnings from about eight, and the lanes off it stay quiet all week. The other half of the destination is the valley. Half an hour downstream the Dordogne loops between limestone cliffs with a castle on nearly every spur — Beynac standing two hundred metres above the water on a bare rock, Castelnaud facing it across the river, and La Roque-Gageac pressed in a single line of houses between the cliff and the current, best seen from the far bank or from a flat-bottomed gabare on the water. Above La Roque, the gardens of Marqueyssac run a kilometre of hand-clipped boxwood along a belvedere with the whole valley below, and Domme's own belvedere at the top of its bastide gives the widest view of all. Practicalities: castles and gardens are ticketed and most close in January, the lanes into the valley villages are narrow and park badly in July and August, and the softest light on the river is the last hour before sunset in late September.

Top Photo Spots in Sarlat

The most photogenic locations for your Sarlat & the Dordogne photoshoot

Place de la Liberté and the Rue des Consuls

Sixty listed buildings in a few hundred metres of golden limestone under grey lauze roofs, with nothing modern in the frame.

Best time: Before eight in the morning; floodlit facades after dark. Avoid Saturday morning unless you want the market

Rue des Consuls is narrow enough that a couple walking away fills the frame. The lauze roofs read best from a slight height — the steps behind the cathedral give one.

Château de Beynac

A twelfth-century fortress on a bare limestone cliff two hundred metres above the Dordogne, with the whole valley laid out beneath it.

Best time: Late afternoon from the far bank, when the west light hits the cliff; early morning for the village lane

The terrace view needs a ticket and last entry is long before sunset — check the hours. The best exterior frame is from across the river, not from the village below.

La Roque-Gageac on the river

A single line of ochre houses squeezed between a hundred-metre cliff and the Dordogne, facing due south and warm from morning to dusk.

Best time: The last hour of light from the far bank or the water; early morning for the village and parking

The defining frame is from across the river, not from inside the village. The riverside car park is small and full by mid-morning in summer, so come early.

Les Jardins de Marqueyssac

Six kilometres of hand-clipped boxwood along a clifftop belvedere, with the Dordogne and four castles laid out a hundred and thirty metres below.

Best time: Overcast for the boxwood, late afternoon at the belvedere; summer candlelit evenings need booking

Shoot the boxwood from slightly above so the clipped shapes overlap into one texture. The belvedere is the opposite — it wants low sun to separate the valley ridges.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical couples photoshoot in France?

Most couples sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, enough time to visit 2-3 locations and capture a wide variety of natural, relaxed moments together. In Paris you might start at the Trocadéro with the Eiffel Tower behind you, cross the Pont de Bir-Hakeim and finish in the quiet lanes of Montmartre; on the Riviera your photographer will route you through Èze's stone passages before the tour groups arrive. Longer 2-hour sessions are perfect if you want to explore more. Book with Photo France and we'll match you with the ideal photographer for your style.

What should we wear for a couples photoshoot?

The golden rule is to coordinate without matching — complementary colors and classic styles that reflect your personality. Solid, muted tones (cream, navy, sage, terracotta) photograph beautifully against Paris' limestone façades, Provence's ochre villages and the Riviera's blue. Avoid busy patterns, large logos and neon colors. Comfortable shoes matter: Montmartre's cobbles are steep, Èze is all stairs, and lavender fields are dusty. Bring a second outfit for variety on longer sessions, and a light layer for breezy evenings on the coast or by the lakes. Your Photo France photographer will send a personalized style guide for your location, season and time of day.

When is the best time of day for a couples photoshoot?

Golden hour — shortly after sunrise or before sunset — gives the most flattering, warm, romantic light. In France, sunset ranges from around 5pm in winter to almost 10pm in summer, so plan accordingly. Sunset sessions on the Seine or above the Mediterranean at Èze are legendary, but they're also the busiest hours; sunrise shoots give you the Trocadéro, the Louvre courtyard or Annecy's old town nearly to yourselves. Midday works too in shaded old-town lanes, but the strong southern summer sun needs an experienced photographer. Your Photo France photographer will recommend the ideal timing for your location and season.

How much does a photoshoot in Sarlat cost?

Professional photoshoots in Sarlat start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour covers the old town on foot, from the Place de la Liberté up the Rue des Consuls. Two hours or more is the sensible choice if you want the Dordogne valley too, since Beynac, La Roque-Gageac and Marqueyssac are all a half-hour drive out.

What are the best photo spots in Sarlat and the Dordogne?

In town, the Place de la Liberté, the Rue des Consuls and the lane past the Maison de La Boétie, all in the same ochre limestone under grey lauze roofs. In the valley, Beynac castle on its rock, La Roque-Gageac pressed between the cliff and the river, the clipped boxwood belvedere at Marqueyssac and the wide view from Domme at the top of its bastide.

What is the best time of day and season for photos in Sarlat?

Early morning in the old town: the stone is warm at first light and the lanes are empty, while the Saturday market fills the main square with people and awnings from about eight. In the valley the last hour before sunset is the one, with the river flat and the castles catching side light. September and early October are the softest months; January is cold and many sites close.
