About Rocamadour
Rocamadour is one street, one staircase and one cliff, which makes it the simplest location in the southwest to plan and the hardest to share. The village clings to the wall of the Alzou canyon in three layers: a single lane of medieval houses and gates at the bottom, the cluster of chapels and the Grand Escalier above it, and the castle and its ramparts on the rim about 120 metres up. The classic frame is not taken in the village at all — it is taken from the Hospitalet belvedere on the opposite lip of the canyon, where the whole stack lines up with the gorge dropping away below. Go at sunrise. The cliff faces roughly west, so early light lands on the plateau and leaves the village in cool shade with the canyon still full of mist; the stone warms up through the afternoon and the last two hours before sunset are the other good window. In between, from around ten to five in high season, the single lane and the 216 steps of the Grand Escalier fill up and stay full. The sanctuary terraces are a working religious site, quiet dress is expected and services take priority, so anything beyond a couple walking through is worth clearing with the sanctuary first. Below the village, the Alzou valley floor and the walking paths out onto the causse — dry limestone, low walls, oak scrub, shepherds' huts — give twenty minutes of open country with nobody in it, five minutes from the crowd. April to June and September to October are the months; July and August are hot on bare rock and the valley is at its busiest.

Top Photo Spots in Rocamadour
The most photogenic locations for your Rocamadour photoshoot
The Grand Escalier and the sanctuary terraces
216 worn steps climbing from the village street to a shelf of seven chapels cut into the cliff, with the canyon opening behind you at every landing.
Best time: The first hour after opening; the parvis holds soft reflected light most of the day
An active sanctuary — quiet dress, services first, and clear anything beyond a walk-through with them in advance. Two lifts cover the climb if the 216 steps are not an option.
The Alzou valley floor and the causse paths
Dry limestone country five minutes below the crowd — a shallow green valley, drystone walls, shepherds' huts and the village appearing over the trees.
Best time: Early morning along the valley; late afternoon on the causse, when the walls throw shadows
Working farmland — stay on the marked paths, close gates, keep away from livestock. No shade on the causse, so avoid the middle of a July day.
The Hospitalet belvedere across the Alzou canyon
The one frame everybody comes for — the whole village stacked up the cliff in three layers, seen from the opposite lip of the gorge.
Best time: Sunrise, with mist in the canyon; the last hour of light for warm stone
Bring a 70–135mm as well as a wide — the long lens stacks the three layers into the frame people recognise. Expose for the stone, not the sky.
The château ramparts and the Chemin de Croix
A zigzag pilgrims' path through the woods to the castle on the canyon rim, and the best view of the valley from anywhere on this side.
Best time: Late afternoon to sunset on the ramparts; dappled shade on the path all day
The rampart walk is ticketed and keeps shorter hours than the village, and closes out of season — check before planning a sunset there. A lift covers the climb.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Rocamadour cost?
Professional photoshoots in Rocamadour start from €279. Packages differ by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour at sunrise built around the Hospitalet belvedere and the upper village sits at the lower end, while two hours that add the Grand Escalier, the ramparts and the Alzou valley floor run to roughly €450.
What are the best photo spots in Rocamadour?
The Hospitalet belvedere on the far lip of the canyon, where the whole village stacks up in one frame; the Grand Escalier climbing to the sanctuary; the terraces and chapel doorways of the religious city; the castle ramparts on the rim, reached by the zigzag Chemin de Croix; and the valley floor and causse paths below, which are empty within five minutes of the main street.
What is the best time of day and season to photograph Rocamadour?
Sunrise, when mist often sits in the canyon and the village is still in cool shade, or the last two hours of daylight, when the limestone turns honey. From mid-morning to late afternoon in season the single lane and the 216 steps are shoulder to shoulder. April to June and September to October are the best months; July and August are hot on bare rock and at their busiest.
Is Rocamadour hard to reach and to walk, and are there rules at the sanctuary?
The village is one steep street with 216 steps above it. Cars park on the plateau at L'Hospitalet or below in the valley, and a lift and a small road train cover the climb for anyone who needs them — flat shoes for everyone else. The sanctuary is an active place of worship: quiet dress, services take priority, and anything beyond a couple walking through should be checked with the sanctuary first.
What if my kids won't cooperate during the photoshoot?
This happens all the time, and our family photographers are prepared for it. The secret is that the best family photos don't come from asking kids to pose — they come from play. Your photographer will turn the session into a game: racing along the beach at Biarritz, feeding ducks in Annecy, hunting for gargoyles on Paris' old churches, storming the towers of Carcassonne. Tantrums and shy phases get waited out with a break and a pain au chocolat, and sessions are scheduled around naps and meals. Even a session that feels chaotic in the moment produces wonderful genuine images — often better than the ones where everyone behaved.
What's the best age for a family photoshoot?
There's no wrong age — each stage photographs differently and beautifully. Babies bring quiet, tender close-ups; toddlers bring motion and hilarious candid moments; school-age kids love the adventure of exploring châteaux and beaches on camera; teens relax once they realise nobody is forcing stiff poses. Multi-generation shoots with grandparents are among the most treasured bookings we see, especially on family reunion trips to Provence or the Loire. The one practical tip: with children under five, book morning sessions when energy and light are both at their best. Your Photo France photographer adapts the pace and games to the ages in your group.
