About Menton
Menton is the warmest corner of France, pressed against the Italian border with mountains at its back, and the microclimate is the reason half of it is a garden. The picture everyone comes for is the same one every time: from the Quai Bonaparte and the Promenade du Soleil, the old town rises straight out of the sea in ochre, apricot and faded rose, tier on tier, up to the twin bell towers of the Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange and the Chapelle des Pénitents-Blancs. Climb into it and the parvis Saint-Michel opens out halfway up — a small baroque square paved in black and white pebble mosaic, with a long flight of steps dropping back toward the port and the sea filling the gap. The gardens are the other half of the town. Serre de la Madone, Lawrence Johnston's terraced garden in the hills west of the centre, is all stone stairs, pools and rare planting under cypresses; the Val Rahmeh botanical garden in Garavan, on the Italian side, is smaller, denser and full of citrus and subtropical foliage. Both are ticketed, both close on certain days and both set their own conditions for professional photography — check each one before it goes in a plan. Season matters here more than on the rest of the coast: mimosa and citrus carry January and February, the Fête du Citron fills the seafront for two weeks around then, and the gardens are at their best in spring rather than high summer, when the old-town stairs bake.

Top Photo Spots in Menton
The most photogenic locations for your Menton photoshoot
The old town from Quai Bonaparte
The picture Menton is known for — pastel houses rising straight out of the sea to a baroque campanile, seen along the seafront.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the sun comes onto the facades from the south-west
Sunrise leaves the town in its own shade — use it for the beach instead. Walk the quay first; palms and lamp posts change the skyline every twenty metres.
The Saint-Michel parvis and its steps
A baroque square halfway up the old town, paved in black-and-white pebble mosaic, with a long stair dropping to the sea.
Best time: The last two hours of daylight, when the sun clears the roofs onto the church front
Shoot down the stairs with only the sea behind. Active church and residential lane — keep the session small and off the steps.
Serre de la Madone
Lawrence Johnston's terraced garden in the hills west of town — stone stairs, still pools, cypresses and rare planting on eight levels.
Best time: Spring, from the February mimosa through May; filtered light under the canopy all day
Restricted opening days and its own rules for professional shoots — check before booking. Four or five different backdrops within half an hour.
Jardin botanique du Val Rahmeh
A small botanical garden in Garavan, on the Italian side of town — citrus, palms and dense subtropical foliage around a pond.
Best time: Winter to spring for the citrus in fruit; bright overcast beats hard sun under the canopy
Solid green backgrounds with no sky — the frame is entirely yours to control. Ticketed, with fixed days and its own shoot rules: check first.
Frequently asked questions
Is the studio rental included in the price?
It depends on the photographer, and their Photo France profile states it explicitly — read the package description before booking. Photographers with their own studios include the space in the session price; those who rent third-party studios either build the cost in or list it as a separate line so you can choose the space tier. When comparing prices, compare the whole package: a session that looks €50 cheaper but adds studio rental on top isn't cheaper. If a quote is ambiguous, ask directly in the booking chat — 'is the studio included, and which studio is it?' — and you'll get a concrete answer with photos of the space. Address and access details arrive with your booking confirmation.
How many outfit changes are included?
The practical limit is time, not a rule: in a 60-minute studio session, two to three outfits is the sweet spot — each change costs five minutes plus a lighting adjustment, and more changes than that eat into actual shooting. For headshot sessions, bring three tops in different tones against the planned backdrop and change only from the waist up in seconds. Portfolio and branding sessions that genuinely need four or more looks should book 90 minutes or two hours; your photographer will say so honestly when you describe the goal. Studio tip: bring everything pressed and on hangers, arrive in the simplest look, and start with it — the first fifteen minutes are warm-up frames anyway, and your strongest outfit deserves your warmed-up confidence.
Can we shoot a mix of studio and outdoor in one session?
Yes, and in French cities it's a particularly good deal because the two worlds sit minutes apart. Paris studios cluster in the central arrondissements and the Marais, so an hour of controlled studio light can flow straight into thirty minutes among Haussmann façades, a covered passage or a Seine quay; in Nice, studios sit minutes from the Promenade des Anglais and the old town. The combination suits personal branding perfectly: crisp headshots from the studio half, natural in-context frames from the outdoor half, one consistent editing style across both. Book a 90-minute or 2-hour session for this format and mention the split up front, so the photographer books studio time for the right window and plans the outdoor route for the light you'll have when you step outside.
How much does a photoshoot in Menton cost?
Professional photoshoots in Menton start from €299. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos, roughly €299 to €450 for one to two hours — a short session on the seafront and the old-town stairs, or a longer one that adds a garden up in the hills above the town.
What are the best photo spots in Menton?
The Quai Bonaparte and the Promenade du Soleil for the pastel old town rising straight out of the sea, the parvis of the Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange with its pebble mosaic and the long stairs dropping to the port, the Serre de la Madone garden in the hills, and the Val Rahmeh botanical garden over in Garavan.
What is the best time of day and year for photos in Menton?
Late afternoon light hits the pastel facades from the sea and is the reason the classic view works; sunrise is quieter but flatter on that side. Menton is frost-free, so winter is a real season here: mimosa and citrus carry January and February, spring is best for the gardens, and midsummer bakes the old-town stairs.
