About Hyères & Porquerolles
Hyères is the western end of the Riviera and the quietest part of it, and its best asset is twenty minutes offshore. Porquerolles is a car-free island of pine, maquis and vineyard with a handful of beaches on the north coast; the Plage Notre-Dame, a twenty-five-minute walk east of the village, is the one people fly in for — white sand, water that goes green then turquoise then blue, and umbrella pines leaning right out over it. Access is capped at 6,000 visitors a day in the high season and the ferry has to be booked ahead, so check the current rules and sailing times before you build a day around it; the first boat of the morning is also the empty beach. Above the harbour, the sixteenth-century Fort Sainte-Agathe — the château on the maps — looks down on the village square, its plane trees and its pétanque pitch, and the tracks out to the Cap des Mèdes and the southern cliffs give bare rock over deep water with almost nobody on them. On the mainland, Hyères has a steep medieval old town of arched lanes climbing to the ruined castle, and the Villa Noailles above it: a 1923 modernist house by Robert Mallet-Stevens, all white cubes, terraces and cut-out windows, with a garden that frames the sea — a completely different register in the same hour. Between the town and the Giens peninsula, the Salins des Pesquiers spread across the isthmus, flat pink-and-white salt pans where flamingos feed, best at first or last light and along the marked paths only. Season: May, June and September for warm water and manageable crowds; the island is at its hardest to enjoy in the first three weeks of August.

Top Photo Spots in Hyères
The most photogenic locations for your Hyères & Porquerolles photoshoot
Hyères old town and the Villa Noailles
Medieval lanes climbing to a ruined castle, and above them a white cubist villa built for the Noailles in the 1920s.
Best time: Morning in the old town for east-facing lanes; late afternoon at the villa for long shadows on the terraces
The villa is normally free but closes on some weekdays and between exhibitions, and an annual fashion and photography festival takes the whole building over — check the days, the festival dates and the rules on tripods and commercial shoots.
Plage Notre-Dame, Porquerolles
White sand and clear turquoise water on the island's north shore, backed by umbrella pines that lean out over the beach.
Best time: The first two hours after sunrise: side light, clear water, empty sand
Forty minutes on foot or fifteen by bike from the village, and nothing to buy at the beach — bring water. It's inside the Port-Cros national park: fires and camping are banned and the rules on drones and commercial shoots are strict, so check with the park first.
Fort Sainte-Agathe above the harbour
A squat sixteenth-century round tower on the ridge over the village, with the harbour, the strait and the mainland behind it.
Best time: Late afternoon into the hour before sunset, when the sun rakes the stone and lights the harbour behind
The fort is a national-park museum with seasonal hours and closes out of season — check before planning the interior. The path and the viewpoint outside stay open. Watch the last ferry: the timetable ends the session, not the light.
The Pesquiers salt pans and the flamingos
Five hundred hectares of abandoned salt basins on the sand bar to Giens, pink with flamingos and empty of everything else.
Best time: Sunrise and the last hour before sunset; autumn and winter for the quietest light and the biggest flocks
The salt pans are a protected reserve — shoot from the road and the marked paths, not the dykes; the interior is guided visits only. The western sand-bar road is one-way and closes in storms. Long lens, keep your distance, and check the current access rules.
Frequently asked questions
How do proposal photoshoots work?
After you book, you and your photographer plan the details privately over chat: the exact spot, the time, what you'll both be wearing, and a subtle signal for the moment you're about to kneel. On the day, the photographer arrives early and blends in — photographing the view like any tourist — while actually tracking you. The proposal itself is captured from a distance with a long lens, then the photographer reveals themselves and continues with a celebratory mini-session: the ring, the happy tears, the toast. Within days you receive a gallery that starts seconds before the question and ends with the two of you glowing. Book through Photo France and we'll pair you with a photographer experienced in surprise proposals.
Will my partner know the photographer is there?
No — discretion is the whole craft. French landmarks work in your favour here: at the Trocadéro, on the Seine bridges or in Èze's garden, everyone is holding a camera, so one more photographer attracts zero attention. Your photographer will scout the spot beforehand, position themselves naturally, and never make eye contact with you until the ring is out. In hundreds of proposals arranged through our markets, partners almost never suspect a thing before the reveal — and the genuine shock on their face in the photos is exactly why this works so well. If you're especially worried, choose a busier spot or a photographer working with a longer lens; we'll advise on both.
What if the weather is bad on proposal day?
It depends where you are. The Côte d'Azur enjoys around 300 sunny days a year, so an Èze or Antibes proposal has excellent odds; Paris and Normandy are less predictable, which is why every proposal plan comes with a backup: an alternative sheltered location (the arcades of the Palais-Royal, a covered passage, a museum courtyard), a flexible time window on the same day, or a free reschedule to the next day if conditions are truly impossible. Overcast light is actually soft and flattering for photos, and a light drizzle on the Seine quays has produced some very cinematic proposals — so a grey sky alone is no reason to panic. Your photographer will talk you through the options the day before, and the decision always stays yours.
How much does a photoshoot in Hyères or on Porquerolles cost?
Professional photoshoots here start from €310. Packages differ by duration and the number of edited photos — an hour on one beach or in the Hyères old town sits at the lower end, while two hours that link the Plage Notre-Dame, the pine tracks and the village square on Porquerolles come to roughly €450. Ferry tickets and island bike hire are separate.
What are the best photo spots in Hyères and Porquerolles?
The Plage Notre-Dame on Porquerolles — white sand, turquoise water and umbrella pines leaning over it; Fort Sainte-Agathe above the harbour, with the village square, its plane trees and its pétanque pitch below; the bare rock and deep water out at the Cap des Mèdes; and on the mainland the arched lanes of the Hyères old town, the modernist Villa Noailles and the flamingo salt pans at Les Pesquiers.
What is the best time of day and season for Porquerolles?
Take the first ferry. Notre-Dame is a twenty-five-minute walk from the port and it is close to empty before ten, then busy until the last boats leave. Late afternoon light is the warmest and the beach empties again. May, June and September give warm water and a manageable island; the first three weeks of August are the hardest, and winter is quiet with a reduced ferry timetable.
