About Collioure & the Vermilion Coast
Collioure sits on the Côte Vermeille, the last twenty kilometres of French Mediterranean coast before Spain, and it is small enough to photograph properly in ninety minutes. The image everyone knows is the bell tower of Notre-Dame-des-Anges: a round tower with a pink dome that stands at the water's edge, because it was the harbour's medieval lighthouse long before it was attached to a church. In front of it the Plage Boramar is shingle rather than sand, with painted boats drawn up and ochre and rose houses stacked behind. On the other side of the beach the Château Royal fills a whole headland — thirteenth-century, built for the kings of Majorca, reworked by Vauban, now a ticketed museum — and beyond it the coves of Port d'Avall and the Faubourg run south under the ramparts. Matisse and Derain spent the summer of 1905 here and invented Fauvism doing it, which is why twenty reproductions now stand around the town on the Chemin du Fauvisme, each one placed where its painting was made; the walk climbs to the old windmill above the bay, which is the best wide view of the town for anyone willing to spend fifteen minutes going up. Behind and above, the Collioure and Banyuls vineyards are terraced on dry-stone walls so steep they are still worked by hand, with the thirteenth-century Tour Madeloc on the ridge at 650 metres and Port-Vendres, the working fishing port, three kilometres down the coast. Practical truths: July and August are full and parking is genuinely difficult, the tramontane wind blows hard and often, and May, June, September and early October are the months that work.

Top Photo Spots in Collioure
The most photogenic locations for your Collioure & the Vermilion Coast photoshoot
The bell tower of Notre-Dame-des-Anges
A round tower with a pink dome standing at the water's edge — the harbour's medieval lighthouse before it was ever a church tower.
Best time: The first two hours after sunrise, when the light hits the tower and the beach is empty
Shoot from the shingle of Plage Boramar for the classic frame. From mid-morning in July and August the beach is full — go early or come out of season.
The Château Royal and the Port d'Avall coves
A thirteenth-century castle filling its own headland between two beaches, with pebble coves and ramparts running south under the town.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the castle wall goes warm and the Port d'Avall is in soft light
The castle exterior is the background, not the interior. These are shingle beaches, not sand — bring shoes you can walk on stones in.
The Fauvist viewpoints and the Collioure windmill
The climb above the bay where Matisse and Derain painted in 1905, ending at a restored medieval windmill with the whole town below.
Best time: Morning for light on the town and water; the last half-hour for a silver sea
Allow twenty minutes each way — it is a real climb on uneven ground. Bring water in summer; there is no shade on the upper section.
The vineyard terraces above Port-Vendres
Dry-stone terraces of Collioure and Banyuls vines climbing straight off the sea, with a thirteenth-century signal tower on the ridge at 650 metres.
Best time: Early morning for haze and long shadows; the last hour for light on the coast below
The Madeloc road is single-track with passing places — allow time and do not block it. The terraces are private working parcels: stay on the road and marked paths.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in France?
For peak-season dates — May through September, and especially Saturdays in Provence, the Loire or on the Riviera — book 6-12 months ahead. The best-reviewed photographers are often the first vendors to sell out after the venue itself. Shoulder-season and weekday weddings are far more flexible; three to four months is usually comfortable. If your date is closer than that, don't assume it's hopeless: availability shifts, and Photo France can check the whole vetted roster for your date at once instead of you emailing photographers one by one. When comparing, look at full wedding galleries rather than portfolio highlights — how a photographer handles a candlelit château dinner tells you more than their best ten frames.
How many hours of coverage do we need?
Work backwards from the moments you can't lose. An intimate ceremony with dinner fits in 4-5 hours: preparations, vows, couple portraits at golden hour, first toasts. A classic full wedding day — getting ready through the first dances — runs 8-10 hours. French weddings run famously long: dinner often starts at 9pm, the pièce montée arrives near midnight and the dancing goes until dawn; if your party will peak at 2am, budget coverage for it or arrange a set finishing time you're at peace with. One France-specific tip: in June and July the sun sets after 9:30pm, so schedule couple portraits around that golden window rather than the ceremony's end — your photographer will plan the whole timeline around it. Discuss your running order with your photographer and they'll recommend honest hours, not maximum hours.
Do photographers travel to any venue in France?
Yes — château and countryside weddings are the norm here, and photographers are used to travelling. Many are based in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux or Nice and take the TGV or drive out to Provence, the Loire, Normandy and the Alps routinely; others live in the wedding regions themselves. For remote venues, travel and accommodation costs are quoted transparently up front — for a Saturday wedding at a bastide deep in the Luberon, expect the photographer to arrive the day before rather than gamble on morning traffic, and that overnight stay appears in the quote. When you enquire through Photo France, mention the region and venue in the first message; we'll prioritise photographers already near your venue, which trims cost and adds local knowledge of the light and the layout.
How much does a photoshoot in Collioure cost?
Professional photoshoots start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos. An hour is enough for the bell tower, the shingle beach in front of it and the castle walls, because the old town is tiny. Two hours adds the climb to the windmill viewpoint above the bay, or the vineyard terraces on the road to Port-Vendres.
What are the best photo spots in Collioure?
The bell tower of Notre-Dame-des-Anges standing at the water's edge, seen across the shingle of the Plage Boramar; the Château Royal filling its headland, with the coves of the Port d'Avall beyond; the Fauvist viewpoints on the climb to the old windmill, where Matisse and Derain painted in 1905; and the terraced vineyards on the ridge above Port-Vendres.
When is the best time of day and year for photos in Collioure?
The town faces east, so morning light lands on the bell tower and the coloured houses and the beach is empty before nine. Evening lights the hills behind instead, which suits the vineyard terraces and the windmill viewpoint. May, June, September and early October are the good months; July and August are crowded and parking becomes a problem.
