Photographers in Carcassonne

Carcassonne is the fortress fantasy made real, and the essential frame is not inside it: it is from the Pont Vieux across the Aude, where the entire Cité stacks up above the river — arrive for golden hour, when the walls go copper, and stay for blue hour, when the floodlights come on and the bridge empties. The vineyards and lanes on the hill south of the Cité give the same skyline with rural foregrounds and nobody around. Inside the walls, work the lices — the grassy corridors between the two rings of ramparts, wide, evenly lit and surprisingly empty even in August — plus the Porte Narbonnaise with its drawbridge and the gothic flank of the Basilique Saint-Nazaire. The main street is souvenir-shop crowded by mid-morning in summer, and the heat is real: in July and August plan for early morning or the last two hours of light and skip midday.
