Ten minutes of driving opens the rest of the valley. Chaumont-sur-Loire sits high above the river with a terrace view along the water and runs its Garden Festival from spring into autumn; Amboise and Chambord are separate destinations of their own on this site; and the Loire itself, with its sandbanks and willow islands, gives soft, quiet frames at dusk that no château can. Bring shoes for gravel and grass, and remember the valley is flat and wide — the light lasts.
