The ramparts circuit
Two kilometres of granite wall you can walk right around, sea on one side, four centuries of slate roofs and chimneys on the other.
À propos The ramparts circuit
ItinéraireSaint-Malo's rampart walk is free, open and unbroken: roughly two kilometres along the top of the wall, with the Atlantic and the tidal islands on one side and the intra-muros rooftops, cathedral spire and stone chimneys on the other. Steps come up from several gates, so you can join and leave it wherever the light suggests. It is the backbone of any session here — everything else is a detour off it.
The north-west stretch, above the Plage de Bon-Secours and looking out to the Grand Bé, is the one with the sea and the sunsets; the eastern stretch above the Porte Saint-Vincent gives you the town, the harbour and the masts. First light is empty and side-lit; the last hour before sunset is warm on the granite and puts the sun over the sea for silhouettes.
Things to know: the wall is unfenced on the town side in places and the stone is uneven and worn, so it is flat shoes and no walking backwards through a frame. It is also the town's most popular walk, busy from mid-morning to evening in season. And it is exposed — when the wind is up here it is really up, which is spectacular for movement in a dress and unhelpful for anything requiring stillness.

Conseils
The parapet is uneven and unfenced in places — flat shoes, and nobody walking backwards. Fully exposed to the wind: brilliant for movement, difficult for veils.
