The towers of the La Rochelle old port
Two medieval towers guarding a harbour mouth barely wide enough for a yacht, with a third behind them and arcaded streets that work in rain.
À propos The towers of the La Rochelle old port
ItinéraireAcross the bridge on the mainland, La Rochelle's old port narrows to a gap between the Tour Saint-Nicolas and the Tour de la Chaîne — two squat fourteenth-century towers that once closed the harbour with a chain slung between them. Behind them stands the taller Tour de la Lanterne. From the quay opposite you get all of it in one frame: towers, masts, and water that goes flat calm inside the harbour walls.
It photographs at both ends of the day. Morning gives clean light on the tower stone and an empty quay; evening puts the sun behind the towers for silhouettes and then lights them up for blue hour. Midday is workable because the surrounding streets are arcaded — rows of stone arches over the pavement — which also makes La Rochelle the reliable rain option on this stretch of coast.
The crossing from the island is a three-kilometre toll bridge and the queue is real on July and August weekends, so cross outside the middle of the day. Parking near the port is paid and fills in season; the quays themselves are pedestrian and easy to work, and a session can walk from the towers to the arcaded streets in five minutes.

Conseils
Cross the toll bridge outside the middle of the day in July and August. The arcaded streets behind the port are the rain plan — covered, and photogenic in their own right.
