Pont des Amours and the canal mouth

The iron footbridge where the Canal du Vassé meets the lake — plane trees, moored wooden boats, swans, and the mountains stacked behind.

Route anzeigen

The Pont des Amours is a small iron footbridge over the point where the Canal du Vassé slides out of the town and into Lake Annecy. From the bridge itself the view runs two ways: down the canal, an avenue of plane trees arched over still water lined with moored wooden boats, and out across the lake to the mountains. Both directions compose; the canal side is the intimate frame, the lake side the open one.

Morning is the difference between a photograph and a postcard-stand crowd. The canal water sits glassy early, the light comes down the lake soft, and the bridge — a genuinely small structure — is yours; by mid-morning in season there is a queue for the railing. Swans work the canal mouth all day and will wander into frame on their own, which is usually a gift and occasionally a negotiation.

Work the banks as well as the bridge: from the Jardins de l'Europe side, the bridge itself becomes the subject, arched over the canal with the trees behind. Autumn is the sleeper season — the plane trees turn, the crowds thin, and the water stays calm.
